I haven't gotten a tree since I left home, lol.  But I'll start and finish all of my shopping on the weekend of the tenth.

I was gonna vent about this, but I guess this is a good place to do it.

I do not like the pressure one feels to comply with office holiday traditions. I have to cook for three different holiday parties, and I have to buy *counting in my head* 8 presents for co-workers. I know some might say "just don't." Or "tell them you don't want to participate" etc... but in a corporate environment, it's just not that simple. Every year, people buy presents and it's just not cool to not have a present for them. Plus, there's the stupid grab bag thingy I got stuck doing because I wasn't here when they passed out names, so someone has my name already. That's another $25. My boss always gets me something very nice, so I feel compelled to get her something nice.

It's just too doggone much.  Then, you take it over to church and you gotta get a present for the pastor, and whoever else you work closely with.

I had stopped buying presents a long time ago. Nowadays, I only get them for my daughter's children. But now that my niece lives here, I'll get something for her and my sister. We're going to my mom's this year, which means I'll need to get something for my other sisters and my mother/stepfather, grandmother and aunt.

I'm just so over it.

I don't buy a present unless I want to.  I just don't.  If you get me one and there was a hidden string attached that I should get you one, then you probably should just keep it... unless it's a new Lexus, or even a "like-new" Lexus, lol.

I forgot, I do have to get gifts for my 7 employees that work under me.  I want to do this because we've had a very difficult year, and I feel as a supervisor that I should do something nice for each of them.

Last year my manager got us this interesting coaster,  that looks like a rug (check it out at mouserug.com, I guess they make mousepads like that, too) with a handwritten personal card from him.  It touched my heart because not only was the gift creative, original, and useful, but he took the time to write a personal message to everyone in the office acknowledging what they mean to him and thanking them for their contribution to the office.  I'd never had a manager like that since working here.  Because it's such a big office, many times they don't even bother to acknowledge people individually, they just send an email to the whole office or whatever.  So many of my employees and clients have admired my coaster rug thingy, I thought about repeating that idea, along with the card for my people.  We'll see... that's 40 bucks for work gifts... I could design the card myself, because I'm into that type of thing.

I hate buying gifts. I usually have no clue what to buy. I spend all the time in the shop over-thinking things.

Only people i will buy stuff for are my two sisters and my girlfriend.

The rest of ya'll will just get my prayers. :)

I'm trying to be different this year because I'm so predictable when I shop for gifts lol. Either you're gonna get clothes or shoes. This year I want to get just a couple of big things...computer and tv mainly.

IF I decide to buy other people gifts, it will be a gift card or something small. I'm just not beat for all the mayhem and craziness this year *shrug*

See, Ness... I feel like there's a disconnect between here:

I don't buy a present unless I want to.  I just don't.

and here:

and I feel as a supervisor that I should do something nice for each of them.

(And I get that you preceded that with "and I want to do this because" with "want" being the key word. Nonetheless, there's still (for me) that feeling of obligation... like, as a supervisor/colleague/manager/administrator/leader/whatever you kinda "have to" do something... even if you are doing it because you want to, it's really because you feel like you should - which makes it obligatory. Outside of work, I don't buy gifts for anyone unless I want to. Even if I want to, I often don't because my heart wants to, but my brain doesn't feel like it. So I just don't.

I wish I could come up with a way to tell everyone at work that I would rather they don't get me anything. My office is very, VERY corporate. And it is just "the way of the world" to buy presents for everyone who has any sort of working relationship with you at all. That's the way it is in Corporate America. No getting around it.

This sums up my whole gift-giving philosophy. I could never quite put it down in words.

Thank you, Mme Rue.

You know, I've never gone too far into the friend realm with Christmas gifts.  If I do, it'll just be a secret off the record thing, because someone always gets their feelings hurt.  I been thinking about doing something nice for a really special friend who is kind of like a mother to me, but I may save it and do it big for her birthday.

What I do, however, is whenever the thought occurs to me throughout the year, I do little special things for different people.  That way, when I see something that may be useful or helpful, it can just be a nice unexpected surprise, instead of racking my brain for something for each important person in my life all at once.  When I tried to do that when I was younger, I always ended up buying something useless for someone that they really don't want or need, just to say I got them something.  I hate that.

Just thought of another thing: One of my favorite 'work' gifts was a mug/bowl (basically a bowl that is a giant mug).  It had some stuff in it and was wrapped up like a gift basket, but that bowl was the ultimate gift to me.  I keep it at work for my soups, oatmeal, or cold cereal, and I just LOVE it.  The girl that gave that to me always thinks of the best co-worker gifts.  #random

Christmas shopping? It's two days before Christmas already?

Got some free stuff off of craigslist for my parent in laws :D
My side of the family doesn't want anything
My son will only be 3 months so ... I'm going to put some money in his bank account for college
My younger sister gets ... a small amount of cash with no card (why waste the money on the card when they only want the cash and no gift cards you lose more money on those wack thing anyway)
well any kid who requires a gift from me only gets cash so all done :D

Adults don't get gifts, I'm broke

I got 7 people off my list, including 3 secret santa-esque gifts. Got paid today, got some bills, and then I'll be ready for Round 2. Itd be so nice this year if I could only finish before Sjon starts.

Traditionally when I do Christmas shopping at the last minute. This year God keeps placing these 4 children that go to my church in my heart to give them each a gift. They have been through a lot. Either tonight or tomorrow I'm going to sit down and do my budget for this month to see how much money I will allocate towards Christmas gifts.
