Is "The Anointing" a personal or corporate thing¿
« on: July 28, 2008, 09:04:53 AM »
Let me explain:

Many times you will hear in church or see comments on YouTube of people sharing that 'That was not anointed'.  My question is....is 'the anointing' just a personal opinion of how they felt the song or is it possible for one to determine for the body at large that the song has no spiritual power¿

Wow. What a profound question. Real Talk.

I think there are songs out there that, no matter who you ask, they'll say, "Man, that song is anointed." ('How great is our God' comes immediately to mind.)

But, does singing or listening to 'How great is our God' destroy yokes; does it bring people to Christ; does allow us, as Christians to walk in love more? Because, at the end of the day, isn't that what the anointing is supposed to do?

I think that, above all else, is what determines whether or not a song has "the anointing".

I think that an anointing is personal thing, meaning - for an individual. But, the individual with the anointing should be used to edify corporately. In other words, other people should benefit from the anointing as well as the one who is anointed.

...But, does singing or listening to 'How great is our God' destroy yokes; does it bring people to Christ; does allow us, as Christians to walk in love more? Because, at the end of the day, isn't that what the anointing is supposed to do?...

There are songs that minister to some, while to others it's just another song.

As far the anointing being perceived or "felt" may have do with the spiritual maturity of the person.

I get amazed so many times how somebody will be quick to comment how a song is not anointed, and they didn't feel anything.  That's my basis behind asking the question.

The Anointing is the ability to do the work of God. Without the anointing you cannot do whatever God has called you to do. The anointing is not based on how good a song felt, it's based on being able to do what God has called you to do. Some preachers in the pulpit are not anointed, not because they can't make you jump 50 times but because that's not the area God called them into. Some of the most anointed preachers in the world are the ones that convict you of wrongness, not making you jump 50 times. That's my general critique of the African-American Church because in our tradition it's about feeling something and if we don't feel something it wasn't good!

Well, why are you so amazed? Everyone has different tastes; so, what you may find to be a great song, others may think is not.

That, to me, makes it a personal thing.

Whether or not the person singing a song causes one to think about their walk with God (breaks yokes),is  a completely different area, IMHO.

i agree.
first of all let me say that we are not supposed to be judges..
second, let me ask you this? have you ever seen an anointed singer who let it go to there head, and then
God took that power from them?
let us not judge, when someone is truely anointed, it it a beautiful thing to see, hear, and watch..it will grab you no matter how hard your heart is.

ps: you look good VT, hope all is going well, be blessed.
Let your voice, be one voice, to Glorify the Lord.

I think what gives a song spiritual power is how spiritual you are inside. Some people sing to sing or play to play and that's fine. But when some people sang and you can tell they have been through something that's connected them with that song. Just like "I Found Jesus"  sang by Twinkie Clark brings me to tears everytime I hear but my sister doesn't like the song at all, lol.

The anointing is something given to us by God. The thing is, it doesn't come easy, and it isn't given to everyone. Why? Because if the anointing was given to everyone who said they wanted some anointing then it would lose its value. People would be selling anointing in a can if it was so easy to obtain. The reason why some people can feel the anointing on a song while others can't is because their spirit bears witness with the words of the song, with the message of the song, with the praise, or the worship behind the song. It varies for people because we all haven't been in each others shoes. (You don't know the story behind my glory..remember that?) So for some, hearing a song about how God is a deliver, or a provider, etc might not effect them one way or another because they can't identify with it. Or it could be that spiritually they aren't mature enough to handle the meaning of the song. People talk about feeling the anointing off of a song. Be careful about what you "feel." Just because the song made you cry doesn't mean it is anointed. The song might of touched you (heartstrings) but if it didn't make you reflect on the goodness of Jesus, If it didn't make you change your mind about sleeping with ol girl or ol boy, if it didn't atleast  make you feel guilty about what you are planning to do tonight then the anointing of God was not present in that song. The purpose of God's anointing is to convict the heart, encourage the believer, break yokes, lift heavy burdens, etc. Not tickle your fancy! You want to know when the anointing of God is present in a song? when all you can think about is Jesus, you feel grateful, filthy, unworthy, humbled, all at the same time because when the anointing of God is present, then the presence of God is there also. You should not be able to be in God's presence without feeling unworthy. I don't care who you are!!!
