Cloud Computing
« on: August 07, 2012, 06:11:19 PM »
This may soon be a moot point, since more companies are pushing 'cloud' computing - using our PC's to access data stored on servers online, in the cloud. Here's an interview with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak -

http://news.yahoo.com/apple-co-founder-wozniak-sees-trouble-cloud-133427659.html

Bonus Question - Would people who don't trust the 'cloud' be more likely to be conservative/libertarians?
Would those who do tend to be more liberal politically?

;)

i trust a lot of data in the cloud

my email for example is in the cloud

I utilize drop box for all my files so that is in the cloud

However I like to imagine I am complete control of how long my information stays in the cloud (debatable i know). Not only that have you seen how many times google and facebook and cellphone companies respond to government subpeonas for information? I mean there are some law enforcement that just ask for all the information they can get that has nothing to do with their case... at least I can imagine if I wanted to remove my information from the services I use the data will actually be gone when I hit delete and not like facebook where I can cancel my account but all my data is still there just in case i come back  ::)

so in short

Yes - but will back up on my hard drive(s)

I trust the cloud to make my data available 99.9% of the time and accessible from anywhere I have a connection.

oh the other thing about the cloud that I dont like is you have to upload and download your information!!!

for those who struggle with the concept of cloud storage think of it like this

at your home you can store stuff in your closet right? And if you wanted you could also store stuff at one of those storage unit places

thats all the cloud is a place somewhere in the city that you put your stuff instead of keeping it in your house.

cloud computing is a little harder to grasp the advantages of but I'll try

For example at your home you can cook dinner right? and if you wanted you could take all your ingredients to a communal kitchen and cook it there

that's all cloud computing is... instead of relying on your computer at home to do all the calculations for something you send your data to some super big computer that spits out the answer in a fraction of the time it would take your computer at home.

no point in being worried about it ... it is just as easy to break into your house

I just log on to LGM see when you don't post ...

Do a background check or your credit report or something that has your mailing address

Drive by your house during that time to see if you are there

He proves the point Ive made in past posts. Some people think you are paranoid but the fact is privacy will soon be a thing of the past.

I'm guessing that he can just ask the dude to ask his friend for the 4 digit code so that he can restore the data to his Mac Book. Good article though, shows how weak our privacy is with just a little thought. However I'm all for Cloud Computing from a business/company or institution stand point. When it comes to personal information, however, keep it on your PC and back it up on an external drive.

Just listen!
