Timing and Rhythm Help
« on: July 19, 2004, 05:03:55 PM »
Hello all!! I am a new member here and hope to poke my head in and out. I am white and go to an all black church. My dad teaches Sunday school there. I play the piano sometimes at church, not too often.  I have been playing for 8 years and I love IT!!!! I am 19 years old.

Now my problem is timing and rhythms. I need some help. What could I do to strengthen this ability?

Thanks,
The Tuna (Mike)

for starters, get yahoomessenger and add me, hammondman_69@yahoo.com, im sure i can help you with whatever you need..........

now to really help you with your problem, all you have to do is take something you want to learn like say, " god is a good god " ........ just slow it down,,,,way down, and you will notice the real time and location of the chge better, for instance; god is a good god, would be the first chord,  and it would last until end of  yes he is....and then theirs a slight pause before the next chage, on god is a........ anyway, when you slow it down it allows you to hear which words as well, the next change might be on!,  also singing and playing always helps a musician out with his timing and rythym..............ultimately rythym is a natural thing, you either have it or you do.......but with god all things are possible.............
gieres.....

god is greatly to be praised!!!!!!!!!

Practice in a private place where no one can see you. Pat your feet to a steady beat. Control your body. Nod your head to a steady beat. Clap softly to a steady beat. Keep the beat even. Engage as much of your body, as you can into keeping a steady beat.  Do this 15-30 minutes every day. for a month or two. You should begin to notice a change in your musical performance. You can't play rhythm unless you feel rhythm. My father loved music. He had a beautiful baritone voice. He almost always sang in B flat, however he had bad timing. He either held his pitches too long or too short. He didn't practice so he never got better. He joined his church choir after he retired, but he died at 73 years old without improving his rhythm. He knew the names of every player in the NBA, and all the good college boys, because he studied to know that. I tried to tell him he needed to practice his singing the same way.Apparently he loved sports more than music. Practice!
The greatest mistake most amateur musicians make is giving up.  Don't give up !!!
