Hello Everyone,

I was just sitting wit a couple of my musician friends and we were having a disccussion on musician being well rounded...... It struck a "cause" in our conversation.... We wanted feedback on how others felt about musician having the God given gift to play ... which is Great.... But the Question of the day is How do muscians feel do you think you should Go to school for music or not??

I took private lessons for 8 years growing up. Now that I'm in college (and about to finish...Thank Ya, Jesus!!) I decided to choose a major and 2 minors that have absolutely nothing to do with music. I think that all musicicans should know how to read music. Riffs and runs do not impress me one bit; what really impresses me about a musician is if he or she can take a piece of music and not only sight-read it, but also transpose it at the same time. I think it is so sad that so many gospel musicians cannot read music (and some have NO desire to learn! >:() Just my opinion.

If you want to become a better musician, I strongly suggest going to school and learning as much as you can about music.  It has taken my playing up so many levels cuz now I understand what and why I am playing certain things.  It has even helped me to come up with stuff of my own using the different techniques.

What impresses me is a musician who can play in every key.  Even if you can't play fluently, if you can get by in every key, then that's impressive to me.  I just hate to see people transposing for every song, it is so unprofessional.
Real musicians play in every key!!!

Going to school for music just ups your game even more. Learning correct way to do theory, get some ear training, and even explore music you might not done before....there is more than gospel! I know i've explore a lot of classical and now I am venturing into jazz. So, I know having that background and degree will give me that additional push or advantage to my musical gift.

The Bible says that my people perish for lack of knowledge.

If there is an opportunity to go to school and learn, then do it.

I've pondered this question for quite sometime in my life. even though I have natural musical ablilities I plan to further myself in music by going to school. many musicians like Paul Jackson jr, Johnny "natural" Najera and Quincy Jones all went to school and look how they've turned out.

...I feel that if you are going to college that you should think of what you expect to do for a living and then decide what you are going to take as a major and a minor....

you will kick yourself later if you do not make a wise decision here!...If you are going to play in the musicians union or teach...I can see it.....But if that is not your distination...skip it for music...cuz you will need to make a good living to support yourself and your family...so when you go to the interview and tell them that you majored in music...they are going to think you are a nut who will leave them to become famous or something!

find out where the jobs are projected to be for the next 10-20 years
and get your degree in a field that will land you a job that makes sense...so you can afford to follow your dream...and support your family at the same time!

very well put. I was a musician first, but i love to sing my praises, having an ear,and can read, then dealing with a piano,or organist that can't read,or have an ear, let's just say it was intersting.

I will definitely say that if music is your passion then go for a music degree. However, if gospel music is your passion, then keep and open mind when going into a music program. Most of them are not geared toward or even understand gospel music. The education will make you a better musician though, because it will round you out overall. The biggest thing about being a music major though it is prepares you to be just that, so if you passion is not music don't do it! Majoring in music pretty much means you will have to create your own job, not just sit at home and wait for one to be handed to you. You must be serious when entering this field. Determination to succeed is vital. Other than that I have enjoyed the fact that I got a music degree.(Ball State Unversity, '05 Music Technology)

I know at my school at least that several of the piano faculty had students that were in middle and high school, but again they were not teaching ear training or anything, but classical piano performance. They don't even teach theory during lessons, because they expect you to pick that up during theory class time. They are concerned about your piano performance techniques, such as finger placement, correct tone from EACH finger, and correct position of your arm, elbow, etc. It does help you in full understanding of the piano, but gospel had to come on my own time.
