Shouting Chords & Preaching Chords...What are they???
« on: April 17, 2004, 08:36:03 PM »
Hello good friends!

     My name is Allen and I'm 16 years old.  I became a registered member of this site about 3 days ago.  I've been playing the piano for 11 years and came across this site while looking for some "boogie" style gospel music to play.  I saw something on here about "shouting and preaching" chords...

     My question is what are shouting and preaching chords?  Of the 11 years I've played the piano, I've never heard of such a thing...I reckon there IS a first time for everything! *lol*

     I want to pre-thank anyone who replies to this message, whether their reply was helpful or just plain useless... :D

Allen;

Please, don't be rude. This site is very helpful to everyone in some sort or way, even prayer.

None the less, shouting and preaching chords can be found in the lessons.
They are used to back-up the preacher.

I'm sorry, Joy.  And I'm sorry to all of those who came across my message and saw it as offensive.  I didn't mean for it to sound offensive, although as I read back what I wrote I can tell where I did seem that way.
 :(
     Thank you, Joy, for your response.  Again, I want to apologize for my rudeness.

HI allen,  im not tryin to be rude or anything but i noticed that you're white so I guess thats a valid question for you to ask because its probrably rare for yall to do shouting music or preaching chords in your church, but anyway shouting music is music u play when the spirit gets high and the saints break out in a dance and u start playin shout music behind it...pracher chords are chords u play while the preacher is preaching and it can sometimes help him get his point across and build up the spirit in church....hope this helps.

Allen;

Just a thought, if you have Cable you can check out BET early Sunday Morning - I believe T.D. Jakes comes on at 6 pm and Bishop Morton comes on right behind him. You will hear the organist play while they are preaching.

As the other responder just explained, the shouting music (dancing in the spirit (Ex: Fighting Temptations movie - when Rev. Shirley Caesar gets to the end of the song - they break out into a shout.)

Hope this helps.
Joy

PS: Now I understand and u don't seem rude at all. ;)

Thanks again for everyone's reply to my topic.  I apologize again for my rudeness.  I didn't mean to make anyone think that their replies were gonna be down right useless.  I didn't mean to "down" anyone like that.  I'm sorry...

Twinkie Clark, thank you for the reply.  I would like to address your response specifically.  Yes, I am white.  And yes, again, it is rare that you hear of or see white folks using preaching and shouting chords to help back up the preacher.  I must say without hesitation that I am getting into the black scene of religion.  All the black choirs and these preaching and shouting chords are beginning to interest me. :D  *lol*  But, I must say (not to offend you) that color doesn't matter.  I know I can't say much because I JUST got through using those type of terms.  But your reply, Twinkie Clark, has been the one reply that has really gotten a "move" mout of me.  *lol*  Thank you again for the reply.

As black Christians, our religion is more lively in that the preacher upon entering the completion of his sermon will often begin to "tune", or complete the rest of his sermon by adding a musical chat, mone, or shout. It would be kind of difficult to discribe to a person that is outside the black gospel or Church tradition. The best way for you to gain some sense of what shouting music is or how the black preacher preaches is to actually go to a black Baptist, Pentecostal, or Methodist Church.
