Male Chorus

Someone give me some advice on how to conduct male chorus rehearsals, teach parts for a male chorus, what voice parts (alto, tenor...) and some other guidelines in playing for a male chorus.

It seems to me like playing for a male chorus is the hardest choir to play for.

Hey, you must be reading my mind. My pastor just asked me to be president of a male choir he wants started. We've had a few rehearsals but boy do we need work.  

I play bass and I'm not that good of a singer, our pianist isn't to the point where she can arrange voices yet, so I invited a pianist from another church who plays for a male choir to come and help us and our pianist get started. We are going to take up a love offering for her during rehearsal.

Hope that helps a little but I'm looking forward to hearing from some others who are really into it already

Just play and ask the LORD for help and things will get much better fast.

  For along time I hated working with male choirs or choruses.  Meanly, because we(men) are hard to deal with(STUBBORN, OPINIONATED, KNOW IT ALL).  But once they realized that they where not the m.o.m....,or musician...., or director....... things got better. My church male chorus is about 15 men strong and  we do everything from "it's all about you" by smokie norful to spirituals like "give me a clean heart". Once they understood that we have to minister to a variety of different people of all ages and backgrounds and were willing and capable of learning.... it was easy.  I believe traditional all male groups can sing anything with the right arrangement of voices in a key in which they can sing comfortably.  I tell them to think outside the box. Just because they are men doesn't mean you have to limit them to only songs traditionally sung by men. One of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard was the sound of a male choir worship in song....Hallelujah, Lord we love you, Lord we praise you, Lord we thank you, Hallelujah. Just dream on the possibilities.

 Now, If they are a group of can't hold a tune in a bucket wanna be singers then.................................. everything I just said doesn't apply.  LOL

Singinbro,you are soooo right. It is tuff to beat 15 or 150 strong brothers in Christ singing for the Lord. As a matter of fact, I would rather work with the Brothers more sometimes than the mass choirs. Reason being you mostly don't have as much DRAMA AND MESS as the other choirs. Bishop Cole

ok churchyreal,the parts are as follows...
Alto,tenor,and baritone,and then bass.
the exceptions are: soprano,or a high tenor,or alto,or a true bass.

i'm in a male chorus,and we can sing it all,but,we have a good chemistry,as to where we listen to each other,and truelly harmonize with each other.

open with prayer,and always close in prayer,and take all things to God first,you'll be ok,just trust.
