Leader of Music Dept. doesn't know alot about music.

The leader of our music dept. doesn't now music.  He just doesn't.

He sees me playing one day, and he says: "You don't look like you're playing relaxed"

I ask him what he means.

"The drummers I see who play relaxed play like this...."

He takes the sticks and holds them in Traditional grip.....Not with the Left hand in traditional, and the right hand in matched, but BOTH hands in traditional.   :D  I tell him he's probably NEVER seen a drummer hold sticks like that.  He asks me "Are you sure?"  I tell him I'm sure.    ::)

I'm learning how to play the Organ.  I only started a few weeks ago, so I'm very new.  He plays the bass, and he's had a Triton Keyboard for years now.  He sees me playing on the Organ and says: "Man your fingers look too stiff.  You need to free up your fingers"  ?  I ask him how.  He says by playing scales.   I tell him that I run my scales EVERYDAY before I do anything else.  He says I have to "Free up my fingers" before I practice Progressions.  This from someone who will sit at the keyboard and play scales upon scales, but can't play a song to save his life.   I guess his fingers aren't free yet.  :-\

He doesn't encourage.  Only discourage.  We don't practice, no matter HOW much I say we should (Most recently Wednesday night).

Does anyone else have a Music leader who doesn't know much about music?   ???

I'm the MD at my church where I play organ. I don't claim to know everything about music, but God has blessed me with the knowledge that I have about music. All I can tell you is to keep practicing, get some videos and books, and pray for unity! It took me a while to realize why my band wasn't clicking a few years ago and it was because there was no unity. How can 2 (or more) walk together except they agree? You guys are playing at the same church and should be doing so as a team (on and off the instruments). Seek God consistantly and you'll see some good results bro! Yell back!

Thing is, he's actually a cool guy.  He's about as dedicated as a drunk prom date though.

The Harvest is Plenty but the Laborers are Few... being a cool guy and being the proper choice for Music Director band leader are two different things. What you are is what you exude especially in music. So how cool is he or how prepared is he? Who is he the transition piece for? Is this the training ground to force him to step up to his calling? Is this a challenge for you to push him up? Lot's of questions... one right answer.
