another question on snares....whew!!!

Hey everybody, list what type of snare y'all use, and the sound you get from it!!!

Man.....I was at a Pastor and First Ladys appreciation service this past Sunday, and one of the drummers brought a piccolo snare with a natural finish on it and a Remo head (I think it was from Pearl). Man did that thing bite!!!   8O  It sounded soooo good!!!  What tripped me out was he didn't know the type of head he had on it until after I saw the logo and TOLD HIM!!!  Strugglin, but anyway....what do y'all think about those piccolo snares?  I want one!!!  BUT, maybe it shouldn't be my only snare????

i'm only 12 so u can't expct me 2 have much money. In our church, we used 2 have this kinda drumline thing called zamar praise and my mum and dad bougt a pecussion plus snare (12") and one day my cousin broke the head so i bought a remo emperor tuned (cranked) it up and it sounds beutiful!!!! it has one nice crack sound to it. If you've ever heard Marvin Mcquitty's snare or Aaron Spears or Nissan Stewart, it sounds nearly the same as those! and its only a cheap junor drum!!

I own two (for now):

1) Tama Starclassic G Maple, 6"x14" (Gold Sunburst finish).  This is a thirteen ply Maple shelled snare drum.  I have a brand new Evans Reverse Power Dot on the batter (medium high tension) with an Evans Hazy 200 on the snare side (high tension).  Based on the number of plies that this drum has, it produces a high crack, but it's able to produce "body" when tuned at lower tensions.  This drum also has zinc die cast hoops (top and bottom), with a nickel brushed finish for the hardware.

2) Pearl Virgil Donati Signature Snare drum, 5"x14".  This is an eight ply hybrid shelled snare drum.  The hybrid term denotes the mixture of woods that are used in the make up of this wonderful drum (four inner plies are comprised of Birch and the remaining plies are comprised of Maple).  It still has the stock REMO heads (Ambassador coated and Ambassador snare side).  What makes this drum unique is the wood selection, bearing edge combination (the batter side is rounded, while the snare side is cut at a 45 degree angle), and the type of snare bed that is utilized.  This drum utilizes the Pearl Philharmonic snare bed, which is deeper than the traditional snare bed.  This accounts for a highly sensitive snare at all dynamics.  This drum has die cast hoops as well (aluminum, I believe)  The finish is beautiful.  Pearl calls this a "Smoke Flake" finish, but I call it beautiful, lol!  Oh yeah...  Tension?  The batter is at a medium high tension and the snare side is at a medium tension.  Lovely!

Since it was a DW set, I would guess that he was also using a DW Maple (or Birch) snare.  Judging from the side views, the snare wasn't very deep.  He could have been using a 5.5"x14" (or a 5"x14").  


That's just my guess, though.  Go ahead and play along with the theme of this thread!

14"x5.5" Yamaha Dave Weckl Custom (7-ply Maple) with dual snare strainers: one set is stainless steel set two is carbon steel. Stainless steel gives a loose rattly fat sound (jazz, old school rnb/funk and classic rock,country sound) the carbon gives a tight popping crack (modern funk/fusion). I can turn both on at once for a combined fat crack pop rock (universal good snare sound)sound or use them individually.

12"x6" Yamaha Musachi Oak with Russ Miller Groove Wedge: straight cut take your head of crack.... hiphop, rnb, alternative metal, gosple funk/hiphop

14"x3.5 Pearl Fee-Floater Copper piccolo" Warm Dark poping snare with a crack that will wake the sleeping folk in the nose bleed section pews. Smooth jazz, rnb, hiphop, gospel.

dang yall....i see taht all ya'll got liek 2-3 snares and they are all top notch, i got me a little cheap pearl steel snare (5x14) that came with ne of those student packs with bells and stuff. anyways, i like it and it works for me and it was really cheap.....

As long as you and your bandmates like it do what you got to do... if money is the factor. Step up to a pro snare when you can... The sound will be your main voice. Get multiples and speak in tongues... joke. I like to gig with at least two at the same time... gives some need change to a music set sometimes.

mapex black panther 12x 7- i have made it sound like a 14x 5.5  jazz snare a 12x3.5 and abunch of sounds in between. that size is very versitile (in my opinion and experience)

mapex m pro 14x5.5- just like most other normal snares.

used to have a  tama 12x3.5 maple but it shattered my churches glass- haha- no i seeded into a fellow drummers life.  but that thing was fierce boy. not the most musical but  8O
