Well there is a bit of a story behind it. A guy told me he used to play. said he wanted to get back into it. I said I'll let you "borrow' mine until you get your own. His wife is a family member of my godbrother and MOM so I didn't think anything of it. I had 3 basses at the time. I let him hook up and well some people are musicians, some want to be musicians, and then some..............to make it short I also let him use my bass grimoire b/c he said he wanted to take lessons. his wife still comes to church but no sign of him. I don't want to go to the man's wife but he needs to return it. Before anyone says pray about it. Already done it no answer yet! So that's the story.

If you didn't want to involve his wife, you could just say, "Please ask your husband to call me." and give her the number.

Would it be so bad to ask his wife about him? Tell her you are just trying to contact him about a bass guitar?  Would she ask him to call? I believe I would, lacking any other way to contact him. I wouldn't consider it stolen until I had exhausted all means to contact him or had a face to face with him.  Is it possible that he still thinks he's borrowing it?  I would want to make sure that he knew that I was ready for it to be returned.  You stated that you said to him; "you can borrow it until you get your own".

Ditto, if he's one of your members, you as a preacher should be checking on him anyway. Why not stop by his house to check on the brother, see why he's not coming to service and ask about your bass during the conversation.

I had a similar incident happen to me.  This dude used to go to my church and made up story about how he needed to borrow my bass until his situation got resolved (he was at another church at this time).  To make a long story short, I have come to understand the concept of "justifiable homicide".................by the grace of God, the dude still liveth.
