Deal or No Deal???
« on: August 03, 2009, 09:26:45 PM »
I happened to stop by the local GC today in my area just to grab some sticks, and while there I noticed that they were selling a used 5pc. Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage Kit w/hardware for $599.00. Then I saw a new Pearl 5pc. VSX Anniversary Kit (shell pack) w/add on 8 in. tom for $599.00, so my question is do you think either kit if not both is a good deal ?/? I'm asking b/c I am considering the purchase of a second kit to cut down on some of the lugging back and forth that I do and to also alleviate breaking down whatever kit I'm practicing on at home. I don't want something that's too expensive, so $599.00 or less works for my budget right now. Here is a link to the same exact Pearl Kit that they're selling at GC for $599.00 http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pearl-VSX-5Piece-Shell-Pack-with-Free-Tom?sku=582734

I haven't heard either kit.  Both would have high marks in the area of reliability.  Can anyone chime in that's heard any one of these kits?

I honestly say go with Pearl. You get a lifetime warranty, an extra tom, the option to add on another tom, and an overall better made drumset. If I'm not mistaken, you would also get shallower rack tom depths.

Now as far as sound, my good friend Mike owns the SCA and it sounds amazing. In comparison to the Vision, I noticed the sound of the SCA to be a bit brighter which probably can be attributed to the fact that the VSX includes basswood in it's shells. Whether one sounds better than the other is up to you. I f I were you, I would go back and ask to try out a couple of the drums side-by-side.
