help i'm lost trying to find my way home
« on: June 11, 2009, 07:56:22 PM »
Hello everyone I have been looking at this site for a few weeks in have learned a few things that I never knew before. I am a beginner just learning I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have learned my 2,5,1 progression by myself and the circle of fifths. I been playing that back in forward for a few weeks but that gets very boring. I am playing Dm7 G7 CM7 in all keys.. I also learned all my major scales last week. But I can not play one song, I am starting to think it is something wrong with me. I keep praying for god to bless me with maybe my own tune but I still can not accomplish that either. So basically I am a folk in the road, becuase im thinking about giving up on the paino thing. Can someone send me some encorgement, thank you and remember keep him first

Hey tyki, first of all I want to say don't give up. It's gonna take a whole lot more time than this for you to get where you want in this music. You just gotta be patient and keep practicing.

Second, since u say that you can't play a song yet, the way to play a song is to learn the pattern. You know a little about progressions already, so what u need to do is figure out the progression pattern of the song(s) you want to play.

Whatever help you need, I'm here to be of assistance. I have been where you are now, so I understand how u feel. Like I said ealier, it's gonna take time. It won't happen overnight. It may not even happen in a year or 2, but it will happen if u stick with it. I'm praying that God open up your understanding and increase your skils as u diligently practice.

God bless you!!! :D

Don't say you can't play one song after you read this post, because you then will be able to play 30 plus using the 1-4-5 progression.
Key of F.

F or F-A-C ,A-C-F,C-F-A== 1
Bb or Bb-D-F,D-F-Bb, F-Bb-D==4
C or C-E-G, E-G-C, G-C-E==5
Using these chords alone, the song below can be played.  So can sooo  many others. Listen to the songs. Try to perceive where the changes are.  They usually follow the pattern 1-4-1-5-1. To change keys, simply get the 1-4-5 of the new key and follow the same pattern. Of course this is all very elementary.  If you are already past this, you likely can play many songs and just have not put it together.

Back in august of 2008 I was in the same boat. I thought I was stupid or something because i had done all this studying and payed all this money for lesson and yet i couldnt play a song, i mean no songs. I could throw the theory at u but when it came to playing something just wasnt clicking. But like the man said theoreticly if u know the major scales the 1-4-5 progression will enable u to play "Hundreds" of songs without even having to think about any of the other scale degrees. But i guess it really depends on what type of music your trying to play because the 1-4-5 is like blues and i use that for so many songs old hymn book songs to quartet style. if your trying to play the contemporary stuff then yes i see where your frustration is because i have a serious problems finding a chord whose root note doesnt match the bass note, its crazy but i know it will take time, cause in just one year i feel like i have climbed a mountain. dont give up please, because its worth the hard work when u play something and it sound great. just practice,sometime i just shuffle my ipod and play to random songs to see if i can find the changes before the song is over it helps alot.

For a beginner, I highly recommend Gospel Keys 202.

tyki,

When I first started I didn't understand music at all.  Before you can learn how to play, you have to gain a very basic understanding of how music works, and this DVD gave me a few very basic progressions and demonstrated how they apply to numerous songs.

I can't recommend it enough:

Co-sign 100%!! I happen to have that DVD set and I know its very helpful for beginners. I also have the 300 pg course which is also good.
