The truth for one is not necessarily the truth for another.  If you needed a musician right away and a neophite was all that was available and he wanted to become at least adequate right away, the use of the transpose button would be a benefit in his effort.

The reason that there is so much discussion is that there are as many reasons for people to be trying to learn piano as there are people who post. Some are not really trying to be master piano players. They just want to have fun and play.  They don't and will not see anything wrong with using the transpose button.  For them, it is not wrong.

Some are good players who are only interested in doing their jobs in the best way they can.  If the transpose button helps, they will use it.  Is that wrong?  I don't think so. They will not understand an argument against it.

You have those who are trying to be the best musician that they can be and want to know all about the profession. They are serious about it and know that you must learn all keys, theory, reading skills, chord structure, scales, etc. to get to the level that they are seeking(as a rule, not always).
They are trying to tell others the truth of that. They are not wrong.

The question is, "what is true for me?".  If you are very satisfied using the transpose button and it works for you.  You are doing what makes you satisfied, it is not wrong.  If you find yourself yearning for the skills on one who is better than you and who can flip keys like hamburgers, you gotta leave that transpose button alone.  Its wrong for you.

I would want to know what a person was trying to accomplish by using the transpose button.  And where he /she wanted to go in music.  Then I would say if I thought it was right or wrong for that person.

The discussions are fun and enlightening though.  You get to see many viewpoints with good reasoning. The information garnered miight help a reader make a good decision relative to his own purpose.

Personally, as I have stated in previous threads, I can't use the transpose button very well.  It messes with my ear. I do believe that if I could use transpose well, I would be able to play in keys where I am very familiar and transpose out as necessary and play more easily in those keys.  I would not feel bad or wrong about using transpose.  But I am not trying/expecting to be a Richard Smallwood.

U don't owe anyone an apology.  We are all here to learn from one another.  We all have different beliefs as musicians.  So, don't apologize for wanting to learn & grow by asking questions.  Whatever u feel is right for u, DO IT.  As for me, I'm gonna stick to my gunz whether people agree or not.  ;)
Real musicians play in every key!!!

I AGREE 100%!!!

I will never dis somebody for doing what THEY have to do to make it. I haven't always played well myself, I started out transposing and I didn't feel bad about it at all because I was doing what I had to do until I learned. Remain blessed JJ and don't feel bad we're in this together. We are willing to help you in any way we can...just ask.

An Amen to T-Block and Chevonne.  Read the posts, JJ, make your decision as your need and your path requires.  The transpose button is a tool. That's all.  If you use it, YOU use it. Don't let it use you.  You will be alright.

JJ, what's been said here is great..

Personally, i was in 1 of the categories that Berbie mentioned--I just hated the frustration of not sitting in  a piano & playing that particualr song I felt like playing as I heard it on the CD or anywhere..so inasmuch as I'm rarely exposed to a piano & I ave transpose button at my disposal--I knew that so much as the transpose button was cool because I could soun good at it's command, I didn't feel I was complete in my playing.
This was all last year.
But because some people here were not just thrashing the tool, but rather encouraging people to learn all their keys, I took that as a motivation.
I used the resources.
I wasn't in a hurry to please any1 but myself (because no 1 is going to applaud you & say wow, you play in all the keys etc ;)).
So 1st, know why you do it.

I'm glad I took the journey..Now I can just watch some1 play & sort of figure out what they are doing, regardless of key they are in. because I UNDERSTAND the relation of note intervals on the piano.

Now learning all the keys doesn't mean learning all of them in 1 go..you can learn a new key every periodical cycle.
However, some resources here are excellent to help you play in all the keys more or less at the same time..
That was the case with me..
I did the exercises...woke up one day..& realized that I could play a few songs in baby style in all the keys 8)
