Need suggestions...

HI, everyone!  Just joined, and I know I've got a lot of learning ahead.  I've never played worship piano, and, I'm really only a good beginner; I can play pop tunes and know a good amount of chords, but worship piano is a "whole 'nother dog"!!  What would be the best way for me to actually get to playing?  I'd really like to get the theory part later; now, I'd just prefer to start learning to play.  Any suggestions??

I would suggest that you get a teacher, or a few DVDS. Urban Worship extreme is very good at teaching. But if you are gonna take lessons, he/she will probaly teach you using theory, so it might be a good Idea to learn it.

I should have said I know a lot of theory (at least how to form most chords), but don't want to be bothered with that right now.  Guess I put my foot in my mouth!  Sorry...

It is IMPOSSIBLE to be the best keyboard player that you can be without THEORY!!! I posted this when you asked the question in the "video for beginners" thread. Theory will teach you how to play in every key, how to play various progressions, and everything else.

The only way I know of that you can learn to play worship music without theory is to have certain prgressions given to you & then you memorize them but can never really come up with unique ideas
Another way is to have someone show you the chords as they play & you play exactly the same thing.


I know what you mean & are going through, but if anything you apply is going to be developed & meaningful for a long time to come, you have to use theory (even if you are unaware of it ) to understand it.

I believe that even musicians who can play in many keys but "don't know" theory actually know it, it's just that it's applied in an informal manner, because there are certain patterns they look at as well (unless of course if they do it purely by ear like some that I know.)
