hand position
« on: January 23, 2008, 05:16:33 PM »
Hi everyone! I've played piano for about two years and what I've learned has been totally self taught and I play by ear. My playing is VERY limited and I have found that my hand positioning is totally wrong. I've consulted other musicians about this and they said just to keep going sense that is how I've learned. So now I'm wondering should I just completely start over or just keep doing what I'm doing. I really would like to get better because I like to help with our teens and have learned that GOOD and FAITHFUL musicians are hard to come by and I don't want to have to depend on anyone else if I don't have to. We could just go with the flow in case someone doesn't show up. So what advice would you guys give? Keep going or start over?

My advice is don't ever give up.  What you need to do is figure out what's so wrong with your current hand positions then go about changing them.
Real musicians play in every key!!!
Music Theory, da numbers work!

When playing the piano, your hands should look like there is a ball in you palms, in other words you hands should not be flat on the keys. Like the dude in this video (Fmason)

I've been "playing" for a year & a quarter & I found my fingering to be wanting when I looked at the theory :-\
But I was quite comfortable with my fingering.
What I did try to do was to test my fingering against the fast runs going back & forth to see if there was anything flawed with it.

Where I found my fingering wanting, I adapted it to the recommended, otherwise, stick to the most comfortable fingering for a specific key.
