I was listening the song "South American Sojourn" by Spyro Gyra and the drummer was insane. So I looked up the song, found this drummer, and I was like dang! He definitely has some weckl influence.

You vets have probably heard of him. Enjoy.

Joel's definitely a veteran.  Check out Gary Novak, too.  On Chick Corea's "Paint the world" CD, he's extremely tasteful.

Definitely a heck of a player.  If I am not mistaken, Joel left the band in 2003.  He is still a nut nonetheless.  I liked the way he didn't try to blaze a bunch of chops, but still let you know that he knew what he was doing MUSICALLY.  Did you peep how he played around the melody?  He started off his solo by embelshing the melody line.  His phrasing is bar none in this clip.

...OMG.  Finally, a very musical drum Solo if you will.  I love the way he let's things breath.  He's definitely saying something and getting his point across. 

...I love the way he respects the "space".  Something that's not talked about a lot these days. :-\

It was just completely unforced, and I know i've been saying this a lot lately but it was very "natural." It was quality over quantity.

It just shows where his head's been. He's put so much time practicing, studying, and listening.

It's "natural" because he's been there before. Because he's been there so often, you could almost feel in his playing that he doesn't get his self worth from people anymore, but from being so selfless and honest everytime he plays. It's like he knows who he is.

You see his expressions? He loves it, he's %100 when he's playing. I dig...

...that should be "our" goal everytime we play. 


...haven't you noticed that when you don't care about who's looking at you or any other distractions and you focus on the Music, have fun and really enjoy your instrument and playing with everyone else.......... you play "great"???
