WHAT'S UP MEMBERS CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN GET SOME GOOD FOUNDATION ON LEARNING HOW TO PLAY THE ORGAN? I KNOW THE BASIC KEYS AND STUFF LIKE THAT. THE PEDAL COORDINATION IS EASY FOR ME TOO WHICH SOME SAY IS HARD. I CAN PLAY SOMETHING IF SOMEONE SHOWS ME HOW. THAT IS, I WOULD HAVE TO WRITE DOWN THE CHORDS IN BASIC KEY ENGLISH (IE EB, F#) AND PRATICE UNTIL I GET IT SMOOTHLY. I'M NOT AT THAT POINT TO PICK UP A SONG BUT I CAN PICK UP CHORDS BY WATCHING. THE THING IS I CAN PLAY SOME CHORDS THAT SOMEONE SHOWED ME AND BUILD ON THEM A LITTLE. IF SOMEONE WAS TO ASK ME WHAT KIND OF CHORDS AND THE KEY..........I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT TO TELL THEM. ?/? I HAVE SEEN A FEW OF THESE VIDEOS PEOPLE HAVE OUT BUT THEY DON'T REALLY HELP BEGINNERS LIKE ME.YEH I CAN COPY WHAT THE VIDEO DOES BY STILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING. THING IS I WANT TO UNDERSTAND AND KNOW WHAT KEYS AND SCALES THAT I DO STUFF IN AND GETTING THAT EAR DEVELOPMENT. I LOVE CHORD PROGRESSIONS!!! I WAS TOLD THAT IS WHAT SONGS  ARE, USING SIMILAR PROGRESSIONS IN DIFFERENT SONGS. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME HELP??? I'M READY AND HUNGRY TO GET IT. PEOPLE JUST DON'T HAVE TIME THESE DAYS FOR TEACHING.  I HAVE AN ORGAN AND AN 88 KEY YAMAHA AT HOME. I ENJOY THE ORGAN AND LOVE WATCHING OTHER TIGHT ORGANISTS PLAY..........I'M TIRED OF WATCHING, I'M SO READY TO LEARN............ ;)

My mom showed me how to play an F chord, a Bflat chord and a C chord.  Then I learned that the voices in each chord can be rearranged so that there are two inversions for for each chord besides the root position.  Then I played a melody like "Happy Birthday" and discovered the first chord was F and the last chord was F.  I moved to the Bflat sometimes and I moved to the C sometimes, but F was the home key around which all the other pitches and harmonies revolved.  This gave me a feeling for a key center.  After this I had an appreciation for what a key is. The key is the final chord of rest, and the sound which is at rest.  The other voices are moving and must move from one place to the next. F sounds like it is at rest, so it is the key of that song using those chords.  Experiment with this idea as you learn more chords.

Concerning DVDs check out Sebastion Wheat's instructional DVD, it look like it will be what can get you on your way. Also what i do is look into jazz and classical and experiment in that. This is especially true in jazz for there are so many voicings and scales. Try to research jazz theory. If you need more explaination or if you still have more questions feel free to send me a message, and I will try to help you out.

God Bless

I know this is more than a year since the author asked 2 be told how to know which key they're in, but I know this will help someone @ least..

firstly I dont think U will know which key U'r playing in until you know the scales..You neednt know them all, but just 2 know what they mean/ r..they define what key one is playing in (but i encourage you to know as many as U can..know all the major (if so, U already know all the relative minor. the relative minor scale is a matter of shifting the mode of the major scale..for instance, Gb (aka F#) major scale is Gb, Ab, Bb, B, Db,Eb, F, Gb..
the relative minor scale that applies the same notes is Eb...so the Eb minor scale is : Eb,F, Gb, Ab, Bb, B,Db, Eb..so 1 of the many ways of looking at each major scale is seeing it as a minor scale of notes 3 degrees behind it/ 1.5 half-steps behind..( hope my theory's correct..experts can correct..i only teach myself from the net).

without further ado, let me paste my attempt to answering the question as I've tried 2 explain to some ppl before:
[jrbrownz, thanx 4 allowing me 2 do this]

Hope it helps some1. ;)
