I know that it is 76-key, has the sound engine of the xv-5080, and is a good workstation, but doesn't have sampling. It is expandable through JV-SR and SRX cards (two each). It also has a nice big scrren so it's a bit easier to navigate and edit sounds/parameters. The major difference between it and the later fantoms is lack of sampling capability and different sound engine. But, I heard that it sounds wonderful. Also, $550 is a decent price, considering that they retailed for way more than that, and the current used value on ebay is about that much, sometimes a little more. I hope that helps!

I know this guy that has one. He only uses it for church services only and the sounds are good. I've been looking for one and they hard to find especially at this price. I say go for it. It's a Roland....

Hey, that is a good buy!! I personally own a ORIGINAL FANTOM and i love the heck out of it!! The only getting used to if you are accustomed to playin a TRITON is that the screen isn't a touch screen.  The buttons beneath it are programmable to what sounds you want.  8 buttons with 8 banks.  I Love the sounds especially the horns and strings.  The piano "piano 3w" as well as "grand piano" are good.  I've expanded using a SRX board which makes it even more enjoyable.  I know of musicians here in San Diego who would jump at it for 550.  Good luck w/your decisioin.

Have you guys notice that the original boards (Fantom, Trinity, Motif) are always somewhat better than the new ones?

Yeah, just like the Yamaha EX5 had VL, AN, AWM2, and FDSP syth engines all standard, but the Motif had them as additional plug-ins. Man, I miss my EX5!
