SCALE FORMULA, I MUST FOR EVERY MUSICIAN
« on: July 26, 2006, 10:43:25 AM »
For example a major scale is 2212221 i.e. 2 whole steps, a half step, three whole steps and another halfstep. You can also put a number before a step to denote a larger step than normal. For example 3223 gives a pentatonic minor scale i.e. a 1 and a half step, 2 whole steps and another 1 and a half step. For musicians looking for some phat runs, this is the starting point.

MAJOR SCALE
2-2-1-2-2-2-1

HARMONIC MINOR
2-1-2-2-1-3-1

PENTATONIC MAJOR
2-2-3-2-3

PENTATONIC MINOR
3-2-2-3-2

PENTATONIC BLUES
3-2-1-1-3-2

LYDIAN MODE
2-2-2-1-2-2-1

MIXOLYDIAN MODE
2-2-1-2-2-1-2

AEOLIAN MODE
2-1-2-2-1-2-2

This is kinda confusing to me.  Are you trying to say that each number represents the number of half-steps between each note in the scale?  If it is, then you should also write the formulas using W (whole step) and H (half-step) so everyone understands what you are saying.

yeah 2 is whole step, 1 is half, and 3 is 1 and half, the only reason i wrote it this way is because it helped me learn my scales a lot easier, then when i showed this formula to a lot of beginning keyboardist, i saw how quickly the developed their scale formula, i just figured to try a new approach to learning scales.  As for me, i never had musical lessons or an instructor, so i bought  a lot of books from barnes and nobles, although most of the books teaches the same aspect, i found that some books were more confusing and other books were a lot easier to comprehend, such as a teacher in school, both teachers teaches the same subject (math) but for some students, they understand one teacher better then the other.

I agree, great stuff. I'm all for teaching theory. I guess I'm just from the old "Theory 1" days of "...the whole scale formula is W-W-1/2-W-W-W-1/2...." (ahh..those wear the good days)
:)
