setting rules

I was wonder, for those of you that are music directors and ministers of music for your ministries, do you have set rules for your musicians and choir members, or do you pretty much free lance?
I have been minister of music at my church for 2 years, and as the praise team has been growing, I notice that a lot of members want to sing on Sundays, but they don't make timely attendance at rehearsals a priority. I talked to the pastors, and they want me to take initiative as the leader to implement rules.
Have you ever had this problem in your leadership, and, if you have, what did you do or are you doing to solve them? I know that I started making prayer before rehearsal a priority, but besides that, what can I do????

Welcome to church!!!  Where people want the limelight but don't want to do the legwork.  Well I don't know if you are just talking about the praise team, but that's what I'm going to go off of.  At our church, we have a rotation calendar when it comes to singers on the praise team because we have a bank of about 15 singers.  If the person on the calendar doesn't show up to reherasal (unless with a legitimate excuse), then they are replaced.  Keeps it simple and makes people realize how important committment is...

I agree to the 10th power.  We had that problem at our church, (choir).  My rule was u don't come to practice, you don't sing, unless you had a legitimate excuse.  Oh yes, some of them was angry with me but everything eventually worked itself out.

Hi Samala,
I think that you ought to tell everyone that to sing for the Lord is not a way to see time pass over. I was born in a catholic church and when I was the leader I was always telling the choir that the Lord is just like to have a friend... you have to dedicate to Him some hour of your week, and not to call Him when there's a party (the Sundays) or when you're in a stormy day... but I think that before to speak, you have to give them the example, the heat of your Faith. Don't me bad, be nice a talk with the smilo on your face... this will be a good start.

Every organization in the church should have rules. If you don't, people will run you over. You have to put it on paper.
