Playing in the pocket is when you have REALLY good timing and everything is really tight and together.

my suggestions would be to start off with dennis chambers in the pocket dvd and then after studying that for a good week or 2 i would get janet jacksons velvet rope tour wit lil john roberts on drums that guy has an effortless pocket and his timing is like a human alram clock or something and also floetry live dvd their drummer tremayne walker put down some serious pockets and all are very easy to study

a great dvd would be Camille Gainers dvd, there are alot of rudimental exercises, straight pocket playing, stretching on the pocket and odd meters, soloing and improve as well.
I really enjoyed her dvd she is definitely under-rated.
her dvd can be purchased at her website www.camillegainer.com

Playing in the pocket is when you have REALLY good timing and everything is really tight and together.

Pocket is not timing. Pocket is the perfect groove spot at a given tempo for a song. It can be in front of the beat/click, dead on top of the beat/click, or slightly behind the beat/click. This pocket is not off in tempo but it is not stiff or bound by the exactness of the click. Most people, Dennis Chambers, Steve Gadd defie it as playing slightly behind the beat. You have to be in tune with your inner clock and develop you inner clock with a metronome click not with a loop. You have got to know how to play all aspects of time so that you can navigate time.

Pocket Drummer. In the most general sense, a pocket drummer plays within the bounds (pocket connoting a defined boundary) of the music. The most important elements of staying in the pocket are keeping solid time, playing the appropriate groove, and putting fills where they are supposed to be (no more , no less). Successfully playing in the pocket demonstrates not only a drummer's technical skills and years of training, but also his discipline and respect for preserving the fidelity of the particular music he plays. The term pocket drummer is often defined but what it's not. When an advertisement for a band seeks a "… pocket drummer for a jazz band…", the underlieing message is that the band does not want someone who overplays, or improvises (unless of course it's appropriate for the music), or becomes irritated when asked to play things repeatedly, or doesn't make an effort to work as a team player in helping the musicians find the best sound.

Studio Drummer. Ideally, a studio drummer is a virtuoso drummer who can play any genre (or combination of genres) of music asked of him, on demand, perfectly. An example is the drummer paid to come to the studio to record for a toothpaste commercial featuring a tube of Crest dancing to a jazz-infused salsa beat, and the producer walks into the drummer's booth and asks him to syncopate it a bit more and add a heavy-metal backbeat. Also, a professional studio drummer can read percussion sheet music, live, without a rehearsal, when asked to stand in for another drummer.

Blues Drumming DVD with Tom Breitchlin is another. That's where you'll learn to play shuffles!
