Sabe ain't lyin about them Aquarian heads on this joint. STAY AWAY!!! I had an Aquarian Focus X on it and it sounded horrible. I can believe that these heads are made for rock drummers because even with high tensioning on my musashi it produced a very low choked tone. I've had my snare since November and I'm still going through the head test. I've tried the Emporor X and I don't like it for this snare. Right now I have a Power Center Reverse Dot on it and I barely like this one either. I'm not interested in getting rid of all the ring in the drum so I won't put a HD Dry head on it. I think I'm gonna try the regular Evans HD head and see how that works out. I'm hoping to not have the same problem with the heads for my Tama 7x13 when I get it out of layaway.
Unfortunatley that drums size is more a problem that the head choice. This drum should have been a 7" deep drum rather than a 6.5" deep drum. It is like a half step off in pitch. It will always sound flat. For you Sugarbear, I would say Hazy 200 on the bottom and Genera Dry single ply top with the internal ring removed (ie, take a razor and cut it out!).
The thinner bottom head will allow higher tuning while the vent holes in the top head will get rid of some of te ring while the removal of the internal muffling ring will retain some of the higher frequencies and open the drum up. When you get tired of it holla at me I'll take it off your hands,
I'll put some S-hoops and a groove wedge on it.
