small KITS ANYONE?
« on: October 31, 2005, 08:35:04 PM »
hey...do any of you guys rock a tiny lil' set? like 4-5 piece set with only a few cymbals ? i myself am rockin' the fo' and i am lovin it. my set is a fs pacific which is birch. i got the 8x10 and 11x14 toms. then my snare is a 5x14 steel pearl. my bass is a pacific as well and is an 18x22. as for my cymbals, i am using 14" new beats from zildjian, 18" A. zildjian crash/ride, a sabian 20" el sabor ride with a promark rattler on it, then my favorite cymbal i have which is my 8" A. zildjian splash. it almost sounds like a bell. it is amazing and really versatile. if you are out there and are rockin' a small set, tell us what you got..... 8)

you are using 10" hats? man, i bet they are extremely high pitched with a tight chick. are they very versatile? i mean, they would cool in the studio  or in an acoustic setting but i mean, you could never play rock or any other type of heavy music with them. why do you choose to use that size? :?:

man, i am telling you...tiny kits are wher eit is at. i agree with pinaro, i sometimes will take off my 10" tom and just rock a three pice with my bass, snar and 14" hangin floor tom. it is the pocket that keeps the groove and pays the bills......

8"
12" suspended (tuned lower)
22"
hihats

2 crashes
maybe mini china

or 10"
   12"
    22"

or 10", 14", 22",  with this setup i will use a mini china, or my 17"aaxtreme

but i would have to say that the size of your kit doesn't determine whether you stay pocket or not
you can do sick fills with just bass drum, snare, 1 floor tom, hihats and one crash.
look at yahann jr. and some others on gospel chops, that was only a 4 piece with 2 crashes and a ride. (if i'm not mistaken)

you can have a lot of stuff and lay down the pocket, but provide different voicings like SabianNight always says  . for different songs/pockets you may need different sounds. but you can have a 7 peice set with crazy cymbals and give the right sound and pocket for every song you play.  if you are going to placy pocket you're going to play pocket and be disciplined and musical no matter what is in front of you.

so the size of the set doesn't always = quality pocket, or someone staying in the pocket.

anyone feeling me on this one... :?:  :?:
