::: Question :::

I have an emergency: I have a Tama Starclassic (G Maple - 6"x14"), and one of my lugs needs repair (read: the local shops will probably have to order it).  Because of this, I will need to get a replacement snare (for this Sunday) until my part comes in.  I am trying to decide between the following snares: Yamaha's Anton Fig Signature Snare Drum and Pearl's Virgil Donati Signature Snare Drum.  I want to know who has played/heard the Donati snare tuned, not "store tuned" (yall know that they tune those things to sound like buckets, lol).

I have heard the Donati. It sounds pretty sweet. I think that its a pretty versatile snare. but a little too loud for my taste.

God Bless.

Thanks!  I am looking for a snare drum that has a range of dynamics, and from what you've stated, it's not too versatile.  Question: What was the drumhead and snare tension configuration on the Donati, from what you've experienced?

The snare has 4 plies of Maple & 4 inner plies of Birch. I didnt mean to say too loud, its a little bright. I like snare sound to be beefy. So I like Mahogany on my snare more than any other wood. I do know that the tone of the Donati was a very nice tone, It had Evans Genera Dry batter side with I think a hazy 200 snare side. The snares had incredible response. Sounded snappy. But I do not know what tension they were set to. I think its a great snare...but I personally need a warmer tone.

God Bless.

Yo Jay, get Anton's.  What more versatile do you want?  The man plays everything on Letterman's show with his snare.  Jazz, Blues, Funk, Rock, R & B etc......

I think that both would be versatile. Virgil plays prog rock but he also plays fusion, jazz and funk with CAB Band (Sharing the throne with Dennis Chambers).

Both of these drumas are different and stand out from the main stream: The flat snare bed and birch/maple mix with die-cast hoops on the Virgil versus the vintage wood hoops and deeper depth of the Anton Fig.

Price is probably going to be your determining factor.

I want to play whichever one after you get it. Can someone say jamsession.... ? I'll bring the Musashi, Weckl Custom and Copper Free-Floater. What bring you J_Funky? MAke it a snare drum buffett,

Man, if all of yall are bringing drums and snares, I'll bring something different from my land.  Timbales and congas :D  Remember, I don't have my personal kit yet and my practice pad sounds rubbery. :lol:

Thank you for your replies.  I have a concern with the wooden hoops and its durability in the threading that holds the tension rods.  To your knowledge do they wear out over time, or are they "lined" with metal to ensure that the threading stays intact?

This is a hard decision, as I am interested in both snares.  :)

Nice. I was there for my Honeymoon last year. We flew into Fort Lauderdale, then took a cruise to Nassau Bahamas, and then it was off to Orlando. We didnt get to see much besides Disney World and Universal Studios...but it was a blast. We cant wait to go back.

God Bless.
