What is the importance of intervals. It seems they are barely mentioned in the music theory collection; but now I'm hearing all this stuff about learning them. In this video it is suggested that all we need to learn & memorize is 12 intervals to begin picking up songs Music Theory & Ear Training: Learn to Play Songs by Ear! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7TG9bgOFuQ#) What are those 12 intervals? It seems like there are so many. How can you narrow it down. How do intervals really relate to picking up a song & chords by ear? Well, more specifically, how does it help to name a progression...

Also, how do you identify the major vs minor vs perfect intervals. Do they have a "sound". Why are they named major, minor and perfect? Does perfect have a more pristine sound?? Does minor have a minor sound--- you know, that down tone that minor chords have. And lastly, do major intervals have that major-ish sound--> just the straight forward sound. How do you really recognize them b/c right now alot of them sound the same to me. Thanks guys!
