I'm trying to get up a good list of instrumentals. Any suggestions? Here's what I have thus far and it will give you and idea of my taste.
Perfect Moment - Peter White
Children - Robert Miles
Song Bird - Kenny G
Summer Madness - Kool and The Gang
That's Just the Way It Is (instrumental) - Bruce Hornsby and Range
-
What's the occasion? Or just in general?

No occasion, just in general.

I have no problem with his music, but a lot of musicians do, and with smooth jazz in general. Probably because a lot of it is corny and mainstream.
-
Thank you very much PhBrown and Malththumb. It is truly easy to find when you seek in the proper or adequate areas.
-
I know Norman Brown, George Benson, and Marcus Johnson all do jazz renditions (sp?) of secular music. Just watch out some of MJ's still uses some of the words which may have cussing (only on one song that I know of though).

Free & Easy - Alfonzo Blackwell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV3EuMMxaPE#)
fourplay is good stuff.
Funny story, The church band was asked to do a jazz set for an event, and the drummer, who is also a professional driver, wanted to do "chant", and I was like "dude, i like the song, but if we aint got a chart, we aint got time to figger it out"
Next week, he came it with a chart.
He just happened to be driving for Bob James.

I actually like Kenny G. Dude has skills on that sax. I wouldn't buy his albums or anything, but I can appreciate his stuff.

Seeing as how I gravitate towards the guitar players in the world, there are tons of amazing instrumental songs by George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Norman Brown, Larry Carlton, Mike Stern, Stanley Jordan and so many others.
And then there's more keyboard-driven stuff by Herbie Hancock and Pieces of a Dream.
For sax-driven instrumentals, my friends Justo Almario, Pam Williams, Scott Mayo and Donald Hayes have all released solo records of amazing music.
-
Props to those who mentioned Jeff Lorber. I'd recommend his entire Flipside album. Super good.
Also my favorite album of all-time, Robert Glasper's In My Element. Oh, and Glasper's Canvas album is also amazing.
-
Yeh, wes montgomery is tight.
I especially like his stuff with Jimmy Smith.
Speakin of organ Jazz, chekout Jimmy McGriff, Joey DeFrancesco.
also, a little more modern with the Organ trio,
Check out SouLive.

Ok I'm just realizing that how I view "secular" music makes me look like an idiot but here are more that I listen to and suggest:
Spyro Gyra
the Yellowjackets
John Coltrane
Thelonious monk

fyi: a couple guys who have played with Spyro Gyra and the Yellowjackets are Christ followers. I'm only saying that because some of the stuff that gets marketed as 'secular', especially the instrumental jazz stuff, is produced as a means to glorify God.
I've heard a few live clips from Norman Brown where he proudly declares his faith to the audience.

That's like I was saying my view of "secular" I really have a hard time classifying jazz as secular sometimes just because there's no words so how do you know what it really is. Also, for some reason when I think secular I instantly think R&B and rap Idk why but that's just how my mind works. read my first post in here and you'll catch it but you have to pay close attention ( well maybe you don't lol).

No, that includes me, too. I missed your first post... :-[ :)

Thanks peeps, looks like I have a lot of homework to do but it will be worth it to get all that great music in one place.
-
Earl Klugh and Tim Bowman are both guitarists (and Detroiters woot! woot!) who have recorded gospel jazz CDs. And Terrance Palmer (another Detroiter, bassist with Fred Hammond for a while, then Israel & TNB) has just released a jazz CD. Haven't heard all of it yet, but I'm told it's nnnnnice!
-
You guys listen to hot-stuff 8)
MAY I PLEASE REQUEST THAT THIS THREAD BE STICKIED- VERY GOOD STUFF AND MAKES LIFE EASY FOR US WHO WANT TO COLLECT MUSIC, ONE GENRE/ ARTIST AT A TIME.
I did notice though that you were quite sexist, so I'll throw in Barbara Dennerlein.
I also thought R&B, Rap etc, but amazingly, everything seems to evolve around jazz....
-
ahhhhh, the dennerlein chick. she is fyah on the tonewheels.

Lettuce - Break Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5hYLC4_F9w#)
You MUST listen until the end. It starts getting downright nasty around 6:27 and only gets better. The chords he plays at the end are just.... Whew.
-
Yeah, I LOVE Lettuce and Soulive. I'll throw in Snarky Puppy too.

Ok I'm just realizing that how I view "secular" music makes me look like an idiot but here are more that I listen to and suggest:
Spyro Gyra ..........
Spyro Gyra story....not as cool as the Bob James' driver story, but....
When I was growing up in Buffalo, Spyro Gyra was the house band for a small jazz club called The Tralfamadore. It was on Main St., halfway between my house and my high school. On the days when I didn't steal my Mom's car to go to school (subject for another thread) my best friend (drummer) and I would sneak into the Tralf on the walk home from school and watch Spyro Gyra rehearse.
