I remember someone posting that they recently bought a copy of Bass Player that had an interview with Fred Hammond. How interested are you guys in a magazine that covers gospel bass players? What would you look for in that type of magazine? I'm gathering information and doing interviews for my first publication in November.
-
I would be interested in a couple of things:
Transcriptions of songs that represent best in class
Interviews with performers who are known for setting the standard
Etudes and drills that improve technique or explain common motifs found in Gospel or Praise and Worship music
equipment reviews
-
What kinda questions would you want the artist to be asked?
-
I'd be interested in some of the lesser-known or undiscovered luthiers/builders who are making a quality product. It's some great stuff out there that some of us just don't know about.

How they got started
Influences
What gear they use
Tips for beginners (especially those who concentrate more on runs than being a competent bassist)
Favorite artists to play for
Favorite musicians to play alongside
What they like and don't like about touring
Thoughts on playing with secular artists
What bass players they like (current or upcoming)

Thanks. I definatley (sp) using all of those

I would like to see some interviews with lesser known players. Even some good players that aren't necessarily "famous". There are some great players that play in churches every Sunday who don't really desire touring or playing with big name artists.
Also, I would like to hear about auditioning (for those who still have to audition). The business side of being a musician.

How about getting some bass companies to let your magazine review a complimentary bass or two. I'd be more than happy to be your tester.

Speaking as someone who's been involved in the professional publishing world for over ten years, I think Bass Player magazine has a good format -- artist profiles (big and small), gear reviews, CD and DVD recommendations, transcriptions, woodshed stuff, luthier articles (both "how to" and builder profiles), and a small sliver of community content.
I think the one thing a gospel music mag must have that others don't is a real examination of the artists' place in the Christian culture -- their attitude toward worship, how their faith influences their approach to playing and business, and how they handle the lack of a set format within the gospel music industry. The magazine could also generate a lot of material by examining the varied styles of gospel music -- quartet, contemporary, urban, rock, hymns, etc. Maybe even switch the styles between the different departments each month so it has something for everybody.
My one concern is whether the gospel bass market by itself is large enough to support an entire magazine. I'm not trying to be discouraging, because I would definitely subscribe, but I'd want you to get a large enough audience to keep you going without forcing you to compromise your initial vision.

Its gonna be for all Gospel Musicians.
I like your ideas

The magazine isn't solely for bass. It's going to be one all-encompassing magazine.
Everything spoken, so far, are all things I'm including. It may just take me a few issues to get up to 100%
The idea has been in the works for about 18 months. I should be able to launch 100% online in October, and print in November.

I'm interviewing the Sweet Holy Spirit band today. Any questions?

>>I should be able to launch 100% online in October, and print in November.<<
Once you're 100% online, you could just follow a "pull-model" and let your subscribers download the mag as a pdf download. It will cut your publishing costs considerably while you can get it to break-even. There are so many issues/overhead related to actual print copies and distribution channels and you could circumvent all that by going 100% digital. There is a reason newspapers are falling like dead flies all over the country (online news media), and mags are next (and already feeling the pinch).
Online publishing and distribution is the model now, and it is here to stay.
BTW, count me in as a subscriber. Just let me (us) know when it's ready.
May God bless you and yours as you embark on this project.

Thanks. The interview went well. I have some good pictures and some video clips too. I couldn't record too much video, because they have a video contractor for the convention.
There are some really good musicians here, and I'm grabbing some good contacts. It's just a matter of putting it together now--Oh, and money! LOL ;D ;D ;D

Also, I debated doing the online only version, but I'm not sure yet. As you said, it would be cheaper. I think that a lot of musicians would rather have a hard copy. I'm 80% sure of a mix, and only 20% sure of online only.

God's blessing on the upcoming business. I am a small business owner myself and I am well aware of the trials and tribulations ahead for you. Just make sure you have a solid written business plan, some serious emergency cash set aside, and a realistic exit strategy. These things will help you sleep better at night without so much worry about keeping things afloat. Once again, blessings.

Just curious..........
B3wannabe posted the original question, but U13 is responding as to which of the suggestions will be used. Are you guys cooperating on this venture or is this two separate ventures? Or is this a Bruce Wayne / Batman thing?

He's working with me as a writer. He covered an event in NY two weeks ago.
I just got back from Ohio, doing interviews and covering part of the GMWA.
I had to return early to get back to my day job. :(
If I could've staged the whole week, I would have had enough info for nearly a whole issue.
I have a lot of interviews scheduled up to September already. I would like to get Sharay Reed, but he's touring out of country. I haven't gotten contacts for anyone else yet.
I'm going to try Andre Gouche, since he's a member of the site. Some of you guys are on my list too.

Not yet, at least, but there is a section of the magazine where people can submit their own tips (150-200 words). I'll go through that to pick some for publication.

Did you ever publish?
If so is the website still live?
