Ok this is just enough to help temporarily until people like T-block, ddw4e, cas10a, DaNatimaestro, broallan, musallio, etc....

(1)  (2)  (3)  (4)  (5)  (6)  (7)  (1)
 C    D    E     F    G     A    B    C

Each number represents a degree in the scale...If I ask for the 6th degree of the scale in the key of C it would be A
If I ask for the 7th degree of the scale in the key of C it would be B

If I give you a chord like 1-3-5 what would that be in the key of C
C-E-G  which is also the major chord in the key of C

Ok if I ask for a 1-b3-5 in the key of C it would be C, Eb, G which is also the minor chord in the key of C

*Whenever you flat (b) a note, it means to lower that note 1/2 step.  No matter how many flats (b) you see, for each one you lower the note 1/2 step*

*Whenever you sharp (#) a note, it means to raise that note 1/2 step.  No matter how many sharps (#) you see, for each one you raise the note 1/2 step*

So in order to understand the number system, sometimes it is neccessary to write them out on paper in number form and then you can play in every key

Here is the Db major scale
(1)  (2)  (3)  (4)  (5)  (6)  (7)  (1)
Db   Eb   F    Gb   Ab   Bb   C   Db

Here is a progression written in number form.....see can you convert this to the key of C
1-5-1/3b-5-7b-2
7b-4-7b/2-5-6-1
6-3-6/5-7b-1-3b
2-6-2/5b-7b-1-4
4-2/4-6-7b-2
1-5b/7-4b-6b
7-4/7b-3b-5

This information will also help you understand even better than I can.....

Looks like chevonee covered the basics.  The one thing to keep in mind is the numbers represent members of the MAJOR scale, not just any old scale, LOL.  Just go through each key and learn all your major scales and scale degrees.  Once u got that, forming chords, progressions and other scales will be easier.

Another thing that may help is to learn how each triad is built in that particular key.  Chevonee already touched on it but for further clarification:

Take the C major scale

C D E F G A B C

Start on the First scale degree which is C
Add a 3rd above (in the key/scale) and then a 3rd above that note
C E G

Now repeat the process starting on a different scale degree in the major scale.  Once you have finished look at the chord qualities you have created

C major: I
d minor: ii
e minor: iii
F major: IV
G major: V
a minor: vi
b diminished: viio
C major: I

Those qualities that each triad has applies to every major key.  For example, in Db major,  the 4th scale degree (also referred to as IV) will always be major*.  The 4th scale degree in Dbmajor is Gb so we automatically know that a triad built on Gb in the key of Db major will be a major triad IV, Gb Bb and Db  (which is already inferred by the key signature Bb Eb Ab Db Gb).

(unless they borrow from the minor key, but that is an entirely different can of worms to open up)

I hope this makes some sense or at least not completely confuse you.  Ask more questions if you need clarification.

Might seem unimportant, but good point that U emphasized it my pal 8)
Those notes are used alot in gospel music, so they are a "must-know".

Sis Vonne, what's this now :
Ok this is just enough to help temporarily until people like T-block, ddw4e, cas10a, DaNatimaestro, broallan, musallio, etc....

Musallio's just a crawling baby following after sis Vonne's steps :)

What I do:

Most often than not, whenever I'm playing, regardless of the key I'm in, I look at the chord I'm holding & think of it not as a D-G/B-E-F#-A, but rather, as a b7-#2 in my left hand & a 5-1-2-4 in my RH...(looking at it in the perspective of the E major scale ,when I'm playing in C# minor (or Enat)).

This helps me to quickly find the same chord in any key I want or play the inversions without working too hard.

HINT: this is not something that comes overnight ( knowing all your scale numbers & reinforcing them into your system.)
     But it doesn't require the intelligence of a rocket scientist either :) It's a matter of starting in your next practice & when you play G/E-Gb-A-D to look at it as 4/ 2-3-5-1 in the major scale of D (if you're playing in Dmaj scale or Cbmin)..

As you improve in your skills to identify the numbers, you will only experience the benefits of using it.

You will also be able to see bassline progressions that are frequent & you can use numbers to add the correct passing chords etc..t's a whole lot U can do with numbers...U should see my banner ;D ;)

To break down the number system lets disected first. The Number system is basically the degree of the major scale for instance the c Major Scale

C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

Now lets look at this a little further now if you start counting the c major scale you will see this example below.

C=1,D=2,E=3,F=4,G=5,A=6,B=7,C=8 or octive 1

now in music, with classical music, the arrangments start with this

C=Major Chord, D=Minor Chord, E=Minor Chord, F=major Chord, G=Dom major chord, A=Minor Chord, B=Diminished Chord, lastly C=Major Chord

Now with the number system you use this as progressions like 1-4-5 or 2-5-1 or 7-3-6 or 5-1-4,.....

For Example in the Number system of a 1-4-5

you mostly play a Cmajor chord as a 1
next, you play a Fmajor chord as a 4
lastly, you play a Gdominant major chord as a 5

Now lets try another progression arrangment 7-3-6

you play a B Diminish Chord as a 7
next, you play a E minor chord as a 3
last, you play an A minor Chord as a 6

See the number system is basically a system to playing music now I am going to explain more later but Soak this up for the moment.

HINT: this is not something that comes overnight ( knowing all your scale numbers & reinforcing them into your system.)

As you improve in your skills to identify the numbers, you will only experience the benefits of using it.

In a nutshell, the numbering system is the same as the major scale.  As Chevonee pointed out, it's the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 1 of any major scale, or what I refer to as the "Do, re, me, fa, so la, ti, do" scale.

Therefore, whatever major key you are in, the "Do, re, me," will always be, "1, 2, 3, " etc.
That's why it's vitally important to know your scales.  This is what the numbering is built upon.

Without getting too technical, the major scale is built like this:

From 1 to 2 is a whole step, (or two half-steps) (C to D)
From 2 to 3 is a whole step  (D to E)
From 3 to 4 is a half step     (E to F)
From 4 to 5 is a whole step  (F to G)
From 5 to 6 is a whole step  (G to A)
From 6 to 7 is a whole step  (A to B)
From 7 to 1 (octave higher) is a half step  (B to higher C)

This formula works for all the major keys ...  God bless you, BroAllan  :)

Thanks jjjoe & BroAllan..

Always good to read from different sources...especially if 1 wants to transfer the knowledge to others..

I love this.

Have you seen how Greg Hannon breaks down the song Never Would Have Made It by Marv Sapp in C?

He does it in a way i've never imagined before,but cool 8) :

http://www.giftedplayer.com/gospelweeklytip_030608.php  (part 1)

http://www.giftedplayer.com/gospelweeklytip_031108.php  (part 2)

The "NUMERIC PROGRESSION" you see is the actual song...
ie, it is the 7-3-6-2-5-1-4 etc in the key of C, except that instead of presenting it as such, he's presented it in batches of 2-5-1s in different key scale notes relative to the key of CM.
Which if you analyze it, is the progression above with some passing chords..

Now that's  just cool & can be fully appreciated if one is familiar with the number system :o 8)

Now I am going to explain something about the number system that might confused you but read this about a few times. Now you can change the order of the Major scale but it won't be a major scale which the name of this technique is modes of the major scale. Now let me break this down lets start at the key of C Major

C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1

now you remember that the number is a system now if you do this
D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1

it is similar to the C Major Scale but it it not a major scale it is a Dorian Scale

but you use this as progressions listed above the other post
but instead of it being C-F-G as 1-4-5 it will be D=1, G=4, A=5
now you might ask what chords do I play? well the chords you will play is the same you play in the c Major scale like listed below

C=1,D=2,E=3,F=4,G=5,A=6,B=7,C=8 or octive 1
which would be these chord degree below
C=Major Chord, D=Minor Chord, E=Minor Chord, F=major Chord, G=Dom major chord, A=Minor Chord, B=Diminished Chord, lastly C=Major Chord

and your chords for 1-4-5
C=Major Chord
F=Major Chord
G=Dominant Major Chord

Instead it would be
D=Minor Chord
G=Dominant Major Chord
A=Minor Chord

now if you do this

E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1

you are playing the notes of the C major but it is not a C major scale it is the Phrygian scale and you do the same thing

next
F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1

this is the Lydian scale not a C major scale

G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1

this is a Mixolydian scale not a C major scale
A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1

this is a Aeolian scale which is A minor scale but it gots C major scale notes

B-C-D-E-F-G-A-B
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1

this is a Locrian scale not a c major scale

and you do the same progression with the C major scale degree chords

Hey Musallio,
Thanks for the links to Greg Hannon's website.  It's neat how he breaks down the mini progressions inside of the main progression.

Although I'm still learning about these progressions, it's those altered chords that really makes it sound so sweet.  I got a lot of learning, studying and practicing to do!

                        God bless, and thanks again ... BroAllan  :)
