Quite a few musicians have been asking about talk music, so I decided to start a post specifically for talk music chords. If anyone would like to add to the list, please do so. I will try my best to add to the post as often as I can, if there are any mistakes please correct them. Here we go
Set 1
This is some pretty nice talk chords in Eb.
Warning these chords are somewhat of a stretch but you can make it work!

Notice in each example I started with 4. Where u go after that is your choice. The first 2 you can repeat forever cuz u just looping back to 4. The last is just a 3-6-2-5-1 progression to give u a way back to 1. I really don't like root position RH chords that much so I mainly use the inversions. Any more questions feel free to ask!!!

I don't know if this qualifies to be called Talk music, but it's something I made up yesterday:

B-Gb-Bb/Eb-Ab-F
Db-E-B/Eb-Ab
Bb-F-A/D-G-C
F-B-Eb/F-Ab-Bb-Db-Gb
Eb-Gb-Ab-(C)-Db/F-Ab-C-F

wOW..Chevonee, u actually liked my chords :o
well, I'll be posting more as soon as I've tested them..
I spend a long time trying to come up with combinations of chords & forming them into progressions.
I wasn't too confident bout that 1 bcos when I asked 4 a comment from my sis, she said it was a bit too deep/ mellow 4 talk music..
But I'll take your word 4 it..
I also like doing these exercises bcos I believe it will help me in future to play songs with really nice chord combinations because I note how each combination sounds & try 2 think of a place it can fit into any basic song...{that's just a hint 4 some of you with similar ideas} ;)
as 4 me being able to play...still a beginner..but will explode like a bomb when I come out..thanx 2 all of U here.

Yes indeed I like em'. I always enjoy learning as much as I can from others. That's where all of these talk chords came from, me learning from others and incorporating my own input. Again, I am looking forward to learning more from you. I have enjoyed some of the chords that you posted on the HearandPlay website....especially the progressions. To be a beginner, you are very knowlegable. Keep on keepin on my friend and God bless!!
-
Thanx Chevonee..still working on a few progressions today...
Talk music is nice 2 explore.
Once I get time I'll post a whole lot I have arranged in my book.

Thanx 4 Set #14 Chevonee..I'm yet 2 try it out, but it looks appetizing :)
this is something I just compiled now, nothing special about it, but I just did it to explore different kinds of chord progressions:
SET I
Ab/Eb-Gb-(Bb)-B
Bb/F-Ab-(C)-Db
Eb/Bb-Db-(Eb)-Gb
---/F (pass)
F or B/ Ab-(Bb)-(Db)-Eb
B/Eb-Gb-Bb-Db
C/Eb-Gb-Bb-C
Db/Bb-B-Eb-Ab
C/F-(Ab)-Bb-Eb
F/Ab-Db-Eb-(Bb)
Gb/Bb-F-Bb
---/Bb,C,Db
Bb/F-C-Db-F
--/F,Gb-Ab
Eb-(B)-Gb/ E-Bb-Db
D-(Db)/Eb-Ab-C
Db-Eb-Gb-Ab-Bb-Db-Eb/Gb-Bb-F [just lay your LH flat on those notes ;); I know it's unorthodox, but that's just me]
You can end there, or you can play the next chord in your RH while holding the notes in your LH:
---/Eb-Ab-Db-(Gb) [try 2 hit the Gb ;)]
Db-(F)-(Ab)/F-C-F
-
Some of em I ripped from you... ;D :D ;D :D
o u did>?<
-
o u did>?<
mhhh ?/?
me thinks she did..from those cool midis U know :D ;D :D ;D
-
Well i aint mad her~~!!~~
-
well, no reason to be mad..That's the whole point of this..i think :) 8)
-
o u did>?<
Yep I ripped some of your chords ;D. I especially ripped some ideas from the my_phatness midi. I'm going to put another collection together and show you what I get. ;)
-
This is stuff I did trying to go up the circle of 4ths in my RH..I tried to include a M7 note for every chord in my LH, but not all..I hope some1 will find some use of these phat chords in their playing:
SET II
B-F-Ab/Gb-Bb-Db
Bb-Db-Ab/Eb-B-Gb
Db-Gb-Eb/Ab-B-E
F-(Bb)-C/Eb-Ab-Db [passing chord]
Ab/ *holding prev.chord on RH.
B-Gb-Ab or Gb-(B)-Ab/ A-Db-E
Play the following notes as fast as you can:
--/Db-Db
--/D-D
--/Eb-Eb
--/Ab-Ab (higher register)
-/G-G [If U have very quick hands, you can cross over with your LH & play the Bb as the highest note]
-/Gb-Gb
-/E-E
C-Gb-Eb/Db-Gb-A-Db
B-Db/Gb-D-E-A
--/E,E (higher octave),& back to B
Gb-(D)-A or Gb-(D)-E or Gb-D-E-G-A (Use 1 finger for D&E & 1 for G&A)/G-B-D
At This stage there are 2 possibilities...either complete the circle or play some chords to end..
Let's start off by completing the circle:
A-Db-(A)/E-G-C-D
F-Bb-Ab/A-C-D-F
C-Ab/A-D-(G)-Bb
C-(F)-D/Bb-Eb-G
(E)-(G)-(C)/Ab-Ab
C-Eb-Bb/F-Db-Ab
(back to start/ top)
Alternative to completing the circle like above:
B,E (descend)/*while holding prev chord of G-B-D
E-(Gb)-A-(B)-D/E-Ab-B-E
D-Gb-B-E or D-Ab-B-E /A-(Eb)-Gb
D-A-C/G-C-E-G [You can end here if you want]
to get you to start, carry on by playing:
E-C/Ab-C-D-G
A,E-(G)-(D)/Gb-(A)-C-E
B-Gb-Db/Ab-Bb-Eb-Gb
(return to start/ top)

God bless you musallio!! What key are these in?
-
Set I is in the key of Db, but Set II, i really don't know.
I think it is in all the keys as I move around the circle...I didn't focus on any particular key..I just tried 2 form a link between all of them.
sorry I can't help on that 1 >:(

SET XI
Key: All (any 1 U want)
7/6-1-2-5
3/b6-1-2-3
6-3/5-6-1-(5)
2/7-1-3-6
b2/7-4-6-7
1/6-7-1-3-5
Tritone pairs:
3-b7/1
b3-6/5
7-4/6-(2)
6/1-3-5-7
b6/b5-1-3
5/3-6-2-(5) -->(This 5 is necessary if U attempt to play this backwards!)
7/b3-6-b3
b7/b6-2
6/b2-5-b6-b3 (can end here, or cont. or go backwards or repeat from top)
b6/b3-5-1
5/4-7-3
You will notice that several times I utilized the chromatic scale. That's just my other way of familiarizing myself with all the notes.
Why the number system? So that we are encouraged to test this in all the keys..
Good practice 4 beginners like me 2 learn all the scales & know their note numbers well. ;)
-
Yep I ripped some of your chords ;D. I especially ripped some ideas from the my_phatness midi. I'm going to put another collection together and show you what I get. ;)
show me!!!
-
WoW Musallio, you've been very busy haven't you!!!! I'm about to go try these bad boyz out and I'll let you know how it goes. I can already tell that I am going to really fall in love with both of the chromatic movements. You are on a roll man, God bless you and thanks for taking time to share with us. I knew you had some chords up your sleeve, I read some of your posts on hear and play... ;)
-
I'm flattered Chevonee..da chords aren't as good as they look.
they need some time before they can blend in together nicely.
anyway, something else 1 could play around is the 6-3-4..
U can add the RH chords & passing notes/ runs etc that seem fit for the progression.
the key to making it nice is playing the RH in different inversions as you go in cycles.
for example:
key of Gb
Eb/Db-Gb-(Ab)-Bb)
Bb/Db-Eb-Gb-Ab
B/Bb-Db-Eb-Gb
as explained above, play around in diff. inversions & U might fall in love with it like I did. ;)
-
Oops!! I made mistake on last post & labelled it as SET XI instead of IX..excuse the error..twas 3am here U know, just like now. ;)

You mean you don't preciate the preciation I gave..... :o
I went over your chords and just as I thought, I love set IV and set V
I haven't figured out how to play all of them but I'm sure that more practice will help that. Again thanks for sharing, GOd bless!!
I also haven't tried your most recent ones but I will.
Ok these are some moves that DaNati and I worked on this morning. You can add or subtract like he did if you'd like

No sis Chevonee, not that I dnt apreci8 the aprecia8n a sis is expressing..it's more of Wow, I can't believe I did something that my senior can enjoy (I really respect U Chevonee :))
So thanx 4 the kind words..they'll keep me going.
glad U also liked set V.. I'll replay set IV to remind myself how it sounds (but it looks like it does sound nice coz it ends in the key which i think sounds the sweetest "D" for DNat :D).

thanx guys..I look 4ward to more of this.

Hey Chevonee, that's a nice little progression U guyscame up with.
I enjoyed it from the passing chords & the ending is sweet when played correctly.
-
I really enjoyed the following 3 posts..so I decided to them in the number system as well as well as in the key of Eb bcos I know that's sis Chevonee's fav. key..so the fingering will obviously differ.
I'll post the 3 sets seperately bcos of the length:
(I don't know the key to this, I suspect it's D, but when I applied the # system, i was using F# major scale as a ref.. 1 of my fav.)
[excuse my notation..I'll use flats alot coz i know most ppl prefer those]

4got to mention on top that I normally play these chords on the 2nd-4th register of a 76 keys board.
Also, These progressions sound best when they are played slowly, arpegiated, with the skilful application of the sustain pedal (which is what I'm still learning).

Chevonne I have never seen so many chords on a post since I've been on LGM. . . . . . . . I'm kinda new to this "talk music" thing. . . . but thanks again and God Bless everyone who posted. Once I learn how to do some I might see if I can come up with a few myself.

The Pianist, Ferrente...
These are awesome posts...it's really worth the time to log in just to view these new posts.
I get so many ideas from posts here.
right now I'm working on other progressions to post.
keep up the good work 8) :)

D#ABC# / D#GA#D#*HOLD THIS LAST CHORD A LITTLE*(and if you can could someone please try to name that ?/?)
/ F#, E, D, C# (hesitation on last note before the chord)
BF#AB / C#DEA
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK AND FEEL FREE TO ADD ON..........GOD BLESS ;)
The Pianist
I'll give proper feedback when I get these progressions to blend together smoothly.
I think this chord is Eb7 (#11,b13) .
Do I have to explain why I think so?
j-i-c, here is my reasoning:
The root note seems to be an Eb/ D# , therefore this chord is some D# chord.
let's re-arrange the chord into flats if you don't mind:
Eb-A-B-Db/ Eb-G-Bb-Eb
1-#11(can't be a b5 because we already have a 5 in Bb)-b13-b7/ 1-3-5-1
I stand to be corrected, but I believe it's just that.
-
that explanation seems very convincing, I agree. I'll have some new chords later.

I've just posted this on another post, but just in case U guys don't c it, here it is, & can make for some nice Talk music:
here is a simple example of what U can do with just the 6, 3 & 4:
below is a 6-3-4 progression on which I just expand for illustrative purposes:
Key of Bb
G/ G-Bb-C-D-F (suggestion: play LH G with any mid finger, but not thumb or pinky..U'll c why )
D-D/ F-Bb-C, D
Eb/ G-Bb-D (hold for 2 secs), Bb,D
(repeat)
or move to
D-(D)/ F-A-C
G/ F-G-Bb-C-D
Eb/G-Bb-C-F
D/F-A-C-Eb
Eb/G-C-D-F
G/F-G-Bb-D
D/A-C-F try LH chord an octave lower than others sometimes
Eb/D-F-G-Bb
(repeat from top or mid)
hint: play each chord a couple of times, arpeggiating it for the best results.
I added the second part of the progression just to illustrate the endless options of what 1 can do with the 6, 3,4 .
Another exercise which could be fun is to play around the 6, 3& 4 using only 1 chord in the RH, eg, the Bb+6 chord (D-F-G-Bb)..just play the chord in different inversions using those bass notes
& c what I mean..
best wishes.

Gb-Bb/E-B-Eb or Gb/E-Bb-Eb
B/(Db)-Gb-A-Db
E/Eb-Ab
D-(B)/D-Gb-A-Db

Hello
This is Kevin Cannon. I am a rookie when it comes to playing Gospel Music. I am very excited about learning any and everything I can about playing gospel music. I can play some gospel songs but it sounds very basic when I play it. Since I never received any formal training on Gospel music, I am starting back from the beginning and learning all of my scales, minor and major. I am learning chords, I am also learning scales and chords in terms of numbers. I am also really really wanting to learn to play talk music. I want to know how to take chords and scales and turn that into talk music. I want to learn how to freestyle while someone is praying. I want to learn runs and fill-ins so I am not just using big chords in a song . As you can see I have a lot of things going through my head and I want to make my thoughts reality. Which through God anything is possible. Don't get me wrong I can play, and have been playing for 5 years but not in the area of Gospel music. I REALLY REALLY need some feedback on where I should start ? What things do I need to practice on first because I know that I must crawl before I walk or run. Please Please Please someone help me,........I was given the gift to play the piano and never really took it that serious, but I recently have received an answer about this through prayer and I really have been given more drive then ever from God and he really wants me to "get on the ball". I want to do this so bad that god has placed in me the need to serve. I have no wanting to get paid....I have a good job now but I want to learn to play better and start playing for my church. I don't want payment for something that I am doing for god. Others get paid because that is what god wants for them. God has already blessed me financialy and the next step for me is to be blessed spiritually. So PLEASEPLEASE PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HIT ME BACK AND LET ME KNOW WHERE i NEED TO START.

Hi Kevin:)
It's great to come across ppl like U--who are willing to learn:)
I also don't have any formal training in music & only play 4 fun..have been doing so for the past year.
My suggestion is that you start off with your scales..know all of them back & forth..
you wont regret it:)
Once U know them as individual notes, a well as chorded scales.
Have a look at the LGM ultimate collection as well.
I hope this is a good "starting point" for U Kevin.
(I also had to crawl after walking for 3 months:D)
I'm sure the experts here will give U more direction as well.
Best wishes with your playing.

Hey pips,
Have you ever Thought of what to play before the Preacher takes his place (Preacher Interlude), or of a nice shout pattern, but nice with a contemporary feel to it?
Well, When I played these chords this morning, I thought, OMG, I should develop more "shout" ,"preacher interlude" or "talk music" patterns like this 8) With a nice contemporary/ jazzy feel to it:
Perhaps 1 should start a thread of "Contemporary Shout Music/ Preacher Interlude/licks/ riffs Patterns/ Porgressions " ?/?
Ok, here's my progression:
Key of Bb
Bb/A-C-D-F (hold 3 secs), A,C (BbM9)
Bb/Ab-C-D-F (hold 3 secs) (Bb9)
(Eb)-Bb/A-D-(F)(roll fing)-G (2 secs) (BbM13) ?/?
A/G-C-D-E (C6 add2 ?/?) what's the proper name in A ?/? (I used these 1st 4 chords to drive this progression...just experimenting.
A-Gb/C-D-E-G (roll fing)-A
A/E-G-(A)-C
A/E-G-(A)-C
fast:
Ab/Eb-Gb-Ab-B (just moving everythng a 1/2 step)
A/E-G-A-C
Bb-F/Ab-Bb-Db-F

Hey WJ ;)
I think I should be suspended from here: my schoolwork is suffering thanks to this syndrome I have ;D
I did two other similar progressions yesterday on a small note, but have misplaced them >:(, so I'll have to post some long "boring" progressions I just use to get my fingers familiar with all the notes & to learn to worship "freestyle" since I don't want to play yet @ church.
-
I was in meditation mode when I arranged this progression.
Unfortunately I don't have the time to do the numbers, so that's part of your H/Work. ;D
i split the Fretless bass (for LH notes, the deeper the better) & "Comp. Piano (RH).

MrAndrew posted some nice chords you can work with to make your own talk music. see the LGM Chord Library for his posting..it really gets 1 to think ;D :D
I'm not sure about the key of these.
When I started, I wanted to do a progression in Eb minor, but it would seem like I ended in DbMaj... ?/? ::) If some 1 with a good ear/ theory can help explain to me whether I was still in Ebmin @ the end, I'd appreciate that (I know I changed keys alot during the progression, but is it DbMaj/ Ebmin @ the end? ::):
[i liked this progression BTW :)]
Eb/Gb,Ab,Bb,Db,Eb,F
Eb/Gb-Bb-Db-F
Bb/Gb-Ab-Db
B/Gb-Bb-Db(roll fing.)-Eb x2
C/Gb-A-C-Eb
Db/A-Db-Eb-Ab
Bb/Ab-C-Db-F
(Repeat twice or thrice then...)
Gb/Bb-E-Bb
Gb/Bb-E-Bb
Bb/ Bb-Db; A/ A-C; Ab/Gb-Bb; A/Ab
Bb/Bb-Db-Eb-F-Ab
F/Eb-Gb-Ab-C,C,Eb
Gb/Db-F-Bb-Db
Bb/A-Db-Eb-Ab,Gb,Ab
F/Ab-Db-Eb-F
Gb/A-Db-Eb-Gb
Eb/Db-Gb-Bb-Db
D/C-F-A-C
Db/B-E-Ab-B
Bb/Ab-Db-Eb-Gb
B/Gb-Bb-Db-Eb
Bb/Ab-C-Db-F
A/G-B-Db-Gb
Ab/Gb-Bb-B-Eb
D/A-Db-Eb-Ab
Eb-Gb/Bb-C-Db-F-Ab
(end or repeat)

Hi jstepp..
welcome to the LGM fam & into the piano playing world.
Here is a link containing EVERYTHING YOU'LL NEED TO GET STARTED:
LGM ULTIMATE:
http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,42768.0.html
I suggest you check out these links for AS WELL:

YOU can also encourage yourself by viewing these helpful videos posted by Chevonee:
http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,50757.0.html (NB: WATCH& then apply!)
This is how I suggest you start off:
1) Learn all the 12 (technically 15) major scales.
--If you've covered the major scales, then you have the minor scales under your belt as well.
2) Learn all the minor scales.
(learning the scales means that you also, either learn the suggested fingerings, or you come up with fingering patterns you'll be comfortable with for in each key.)
3) Now that you know your scales:
Let's make scales more exciting & chord them out, so this means you will make use of the resources furnished above (from the LGM ULTIMATE COLLECTION) and/ http://www.earnestandroline.com/Music/Lessons/scalesfingering.html
practice these as much as you can...
What you are doing by doing that is getting familiar with all the keys..
I believe that now is the best time for you to practice T-Block's nicely formed 7-3-6-2-5-1 Progressions in ALL the keys...You can play them in any order you want, but I would recommend modulating (or going up) by 1 key (1/2 step) at a time for starters...so if you start in the key of C, you modulate to Db--> D etc.
You'll find these exercises here:
http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,18903.0.html
(you might find these challenging at first, but you must press on...in my opinion, these are what will give you a real feel of what it's like to play songs in all / any key.
The effort you put into practice this will determine how soon you will be able to play in all keys...
If you can play this in all those keys, it's equivalent to you having played Marvin Sapp's Never Would Have Made It in all the keys :) 8)
4) Now practice all those progressions in the collection.
NB: Scales should be included in your daily routine..
Even some pros who've been playing for over a generation include scales in their daily routine.
From here you should be reading as much theory as you can so that you see how everything fits in the big picture.
This will also help boost not only your understanding, but playing & creativity tremendously..
I wish you well in your new exciting challenge :)

Oh thanks Vonne.
It's not really hard work..It's fun, but can be frustrating at times because I want to find a sound that I can say " Now I'm happy with this" to, but things just aren't adding up..but slowly by surely..but I think from now on I'll focus more on practising my scales properly so I can do all those kitty runs ;D My fingers always seem to be slow >:(

Some of U might know this song (We Lift Him Higher), but i absolutely love it & you can play this anytime during worship/ when people are floating in the Holy Ghost's presence..Or even perhaps as talk music :-\
