If a choir member doesn't come to rehearsal then they aren't a choir member on Sundays. That's how I ran it.

Yeah, I tried it like that at my old church. They basically ignored the policy. I would be playing and look up and see people in the choir stand who just "showed up".
You gotta get the Pastor to be on board with the policy.

See, I didn't play, I just directed so, when I saw folks coming I stopped them. I was good for stopping people from getting into the choir box. It never became a bigger issue. ;)

It is hard to legislate what people should just know what to do. I say lay out your rules and enforce them.

I think many choirs sturggle with this issue the thing is you must have something to offer for someone to want to be a part of it. Some leaders do not create an atmosphere in which people will want to participate. If you have an unorganized choir, people that are organized are not going to want to come to choir rehearsal. If you have people that like new things and you are always singing the same songs they are not going to want to come. People want to be apart of something that is alive and thriving. That when rules are the most effective. If they want to be a part of it they will come and be on time. Usually when stuff is not together is when leaders start bending the rules.

mysteryman, you hit it on the nail. i'd like to add:
1. Be the example as the leader.
2. Always be prepared.
3. create a firm yet family environment
4. communicate with pastor frequently.
5. acknowledge prayer request and praise reports.
6. record everything

Hello guys!
my contribution is :when the practise is interesting people will come.
When they all have the filling that they will miss alot from not coming ,they will all come and even come on time.
Thanks!

i agree. im having the same problem, along with a few others, with my choir members. its just works my nerves to have an empty choir rehersal then have everyone show up on sunday morning or vice versa. have a full choir rehersal and then dont have any choir members on sunday morning. >:(

In choir practise it is better to get every body involve on the activities in the practise.
One person should not do everything otherwise it could be boaring.
The idea of the members should be encourage.
It should not always be the samething every time.
The members should be encourage.
comment should be made on last sundays performace, where possible listen to the tape. This encourage progress.
The leader should know the level of his members and know what they can do(capability)
The leader should also be interested in thier privat livies and care(To be a choir leader is not a easy joy)
The choir member should have contact with themslves not only during practise also during the week(they all belong to one ministry:just like one Family) this could take away the attitude of competition among members.

I agree with everything that has been said but I would have to put this qoute at the top of them all.

We inforce all the other rules that were stated here, plus on more:
The president: has a few people to call, the day before to remind members of rehearsal.
Section Leaders: also have a list of who to call.
We make it know(especialy for the kids chior) if you need a ride??let the pastor know the day before,or early in the day,a van will pick you up.
And we let anyone in the chior bring a new song, then it is listened to by the M.O.M.,to see if it is appropriate.
