Oh yes T-Block is right this is a nice song too.  Thanks so much T-Block.  Also she is right if you do not have the CD, you need to get it because it is really good.  I mean I love all of the songs on the CD and usually I buy CD's and there is maybe one or two songs that I like and I never play the whole CD.  Ever since this CD came out I think it was on Nov 29th I have listened to the whole CD every day while I am driving to work.  It is really awesome! It is the BOMB!

If you purchase some of Michael W. Smith's CDs a lot of songs that some African American Gospel Artists are doing ....... are being arranged.

Thanks sooooo much for the chords............it's a BEAUTIFUL song

Can someone post the chords to I Give You My Heart by Michael W. Smith
some of the words are:
Lord I give You my heart
I give You my soul
I live for You alone
Every Breath that I take
Every moment I'm awake
Lord have Your way in me!

This song is what I live for and is dear to my heart.

Hey T-block, I know it may seem like I'm stalking you, by following you from post to post and asking question after question.  But I'm not, really I'm  trying to learn everything I can.  Ok! here's my question when looking at the bass note here you go from the 1(Eb) to the 6(C) to 7(D) to 1/8(Eb) to 7(D) to 6(C) to 5(Bb) to 6(C) to 7(D) then it starts to repeat from here.  What I'm trying to do is use previous lessons you've given us and apply it to other things (ex. song, progressions, worship, etc.).  Is there any connection the theory you've shown us in progressions to how this song is laid out?
Title: Re: "Breathe" Byron Cage
Post by: T-Block on April 13, 2006, 10:06:22 PM
O.K., here is a quick theory breakdown:

If you really look at the RH chords, you will see that there are only 3 of them:

Eb major (1 chord) = Eb-G-Bb,  G-Bb-Eb,  Bb-Eb-G
Ab major (4 chord) = Ab-C-Eb,  C-Eb-Ab,  Eb-Ab-C
Bb major (5 chord) = Bb-D-F,  D-F-Bb,  F-Bb-D

Now, for the LH notes I play, it's true that they are scale degrees, but also each note is contained somwhere in the RH chord.  Since this is the case, we are merely playing inversions of those three chords I mentioned earlier.  Let's take it chord by chord:

Eb / F-G-Bb-Eb

In the LH, we have an Eb, which is the 1st scale degree in the key of Eb.  In the RH, we have an Ebadd9 chord, which is a 1 chord in Eb w/the added 9th, D.  Since the 1st scale degree is in the bass, the entire chord is a 1.

Eb / Ab-Bb-C-Eb

In the LH, we have an Eb, which is the 1st scale degree in the key of Eb.  In the RH, we have an Abadd9 chord, which is a 4 chord in Eb w/the added 9th, Bb.  Since Eb is a note in the 4 chord, we are actually playing an inversion of the 4 chord, w/the 5th being in the bass.  Since the 1st scale degree is in the bass, the entire chord is a 1.

*So, basically for the first 2 chords, we have a 1-4 progression, but we keep the 1st scale degree in the bass

C / Eb-Ab-C

In the LH, we have a C, which is the 6th scale degree in the key of Eb.  In the RH, we have an Ab major chord, which is a 4 chord in Eb.  Since C is a note in the 4 chord, we are actually playing an inversion of the 4 chord, w/the 3rd being in the bass.  Since the 6th scale degree is in the bass, the entire chord is a 6.

D / F-Bb-D

In the LH, we have a D, which is the 7th scale degree in the key of Eb.  In the RH, we have an Bb major chord, which is a 5 chord in Eb.  Since D is a note in the 5 chord, we are actually playing an inversion of the 5 chord, w/the 3rd being in the bass.  Since the 7th scale degree is in the bass, the entire chord is a 7.

*So far we have a 1-4 progression for the first 2 chords, now for the next 3 chords, we have a 4-5-1 progression, but we have different notes of those chords in the bass

The only chord that sticks out in this song is:

C / F-G-Bb-Eb

In the LH, we have a C, which is the 6th scale degree in the key of Eb.  In the RH, we have an Ebadd9 chord, which is a 1 chord in Eb.  In this case, we have to look at the chord as a whole.  Let's do this by stacking the chord up: C-Eb-G-Bb-(D)-F  Here, we see that this is a C minor 11th chord, and the root of the chord is in the bass.  A C minor 7th chord will also work here if you leave out the F.  So, here we are actually playing a 6 chord, and since the 6th scale degree is in the bass, the entire chord is a 6.

*So, to pull this alltogether in progression format, this is what we have:

Into = 1-4 progression
Verses and Chrous =  4-5 progression, 1-5 progression, 4-1 progression, 4-6-5 progression

Does this make any sense?  If you still have questions feel free to ask!!!

Hey T-Block
I get most of it but each time you say "with the ___ being in the bass" I get lost.  Can you explain that phrase in each break down?  Thanks

This is a good lesson

First of all, keep in mind that a major chord contains 1-3-5 scale degrees of any key:

Quote
Eb / Ab-Bb-C-Eb

In the LH, we have an Eb, which is the 1st scale degree in the key of Eb.  In the RH, we have an Abadd9 chord, which is a 4 chord in Eb w/the added 9th, Bb.  Since Eb is a note in the 4 chord, we are actually playing an inversion of the 4 chord, w/the 5th being in the bass.  Since the 1st scale degree is in the bass, the entire chord is a 1.

O.K, in this chord, I mean the 5th of the Ab chord.  In the key of Ab, your scale degrees are:  Ab=1  Bb=2  C=3  Db=4  Eb=5  F=6  G=7  So, when you play the 4 chord, you are playing the 5th of that chord in the bass, not the 5th of Eb.

Quote

O.K, in this chord, I mean the 3rd of the Ab chord.  In the key of Ab, your scale degrees are:  Ab=1  Bb=2  C=3  Db=4  Eb=5  F=6  G=7  So, when you play the 4 chord, you are playing the 3rd of that chord in the bass, not the 3rd of Eb.

Quote

O.K, in this chord, I mean the 3rd of the Bb chord.  In the key of Bb, your scale degrees are:  Bb=1  C=2  D=3  Eb=4  F=5  G=6  A=7  So, when you play the 5 chord, you are playing the 3rd of that chord in the bass, not the 3rd of Eb.

Is that better?

T-Block,

These are very helpful "Breathe" chords that you posted here.

I am trying to play around with the piano chords on Lamont Dozier's "Going Back to My Roots." It gives one's fingers some mobility practice, I think. I listen to secular piano chords just like you. We are all "sinners", I guess.
I know it is going to take me days to figure them out. If you ever get to listen to the song and figure it out, please let me know. By the way, the chorus you hear there is Yoruba, which is my mother tongue.
It is saying we should remember our beginnings to the time of our ancestral fathers.
God Bless.

Piano chords aren't secular or gospel or anything but that, piano chords.  It's the words that make it secular or whatever.  Also, sinners are people who practice sin.  I am not a sinner cuz I don't practice sin, even though I do mess up, I don't continue to do the same thing over and over again.  Just clearing that up!!!

T-Block, I GOT IT!!!
Wow, when I think I got the "jist" of something here comes more stuff.  Phew, I got a lot of work to do.
Thank you for explaining it and I'm going to apply this to some simple songs I know and break them down for a better understanding.

Good point/clarification T-Block on the "secular music" statement.

I pray for increase in your life!!!!!!  Know that I do not take it lightly that you take out time and expalin theory!!
