I've been offline posting tutorials for a while but i'm starting to get back in my learning/teaching modes again, my question is i know that there are a ton of tutorial websites with all kinds of stuff, i want to know is publishing a website still popular are musicians still using those sites to learn? and if so, as a musician what will appeal to you to say i'll pay $5 for a tutorial other than being in desperate need of learning a song by a deadline.....or what would you want to see or learn?

I'm asking because i'm debating launching my site finally but i want to make sure i'm effective and that their is still a demand for more online tutorials...your thoughts?

Theres always a demand for content, but the market is saturated. You can post on Youtube to start. Do you have any videos posted now?

As far as paying for a tutorial, that's a tough one to answer. I think it depends on what you are doing. If the demand is there, then go for it. However their are a lot of people doing free tutorials. Keep in mind, in today's internet world, you can receive compensation many different ways.  BTW, no one can do a tutorial like you. I go to youtube everyday and pick different instructors for various reasons. Sometimes I like to hear the breakdown of a song. Other times, I just want to hear the cover.

I bought two DVDs about 4 years ago and I haven't paid for any tutorials since. When I need or want something new I look up something free(most likely YouTube). The only way I would pay $5 for a tutorial is if it's either completely different from everything else I find or if it's taught in a much cleaner and more efficient way.

You don't have answer this for me but really ask yourself, what is it you'll teach or do differently from all the other videos and programs online?

The market is saturated, however depending on what you are teaching you could create a segment for yourself.

Are you teaching  a "style" vs breaking down a particular song?   If you are teaching a style,  then you probably come off better with a series of videos  or just a cd/dvd compilation.    If you are breaking down a song,   you may have some luck  with getting people to pay a premium for a single song,   but it really depends on the song.  You also have to balance  the complexity.

if the song is  very complex,   and your breakdown is difficult to understand or follow,  you will lose people.   if the song is too simple, many people may already know how to play it and therefore won't buy anyway.

I like the way HNS  Music  and PianoClubHouse do their videos.    They give you like a minute or 2 breakdown preview  for free.   If you like what you see then you pay for the full breakdown video.

Judging the market by the fall off of visitors to this site I think you may struggle if your intention is to make money. If you are intending to do single songs then sites like Piano Clubhouse & Starling Sounds would be your main competitors. and I would be interested to know if it is still financial viable for them.

As someone who has  learned to play entirely from online courses and books I would say that so much has changed since I first started.  Before YouTube became popular learning to play by ear was not well known beyond a select bunch of musicians, now there are lots of websites teaching the system. It would be interesting to  know if there is still a market for  paid for tutorials.

yes i have tutorials on YouTube now

On the plus side I looked at some of your tutorials online & I thought your playing &  tutorials were  of excellent quality. Very good indeed.

I would suggest a series of concept DVD/Video Downloads focusing on a particular Genre of Gospel/R&B i.e. Hymns, Contemporary Gospel, CCM, offering, talk  ect. Good luck & God Bless.
