Major chord used on the seventh scale degree????
« on: June 02, 2013, 06:46:49 PM »
Hi guys. I been working on this song and I do not know the harmonic analysis to it. I get that it is in a minor key but I just used a major chord on the vii* which is supposed to be diminished but yet... For example say that I was in the key of Eb but the tonal centre was in C minor I played an D major chord on the vii scale degree. I know if Im playing in C minor then the chord is supposed to be fully diminished. But I don't use that chord which is supposed to be an D dim7 but I use D major instead and what to play over it I use the C harmonic scale but starting on the 2nd scale degree and landing on the second scale degree tone. But I don't know what is the harmonic analysis is? Is it supposed to be a bII borrowed from another key perhaps? I know for sure it is not ii* diminished like it says written in the book.

What are the chords before & after the D major chord? This will help narrow the possiblities down. I ask because it could be a temporary modulation/key change case.

If the song is in Cmin it would be the second chord in the scale which is diminished. Most church musicians would just say start on the 6. As far as using a D major on the 7 in Eb I do that all the time when moving from 4 to 3.

Here are the chords to the chord progression. C minor - Bb major - Ab major - D major and then it repeats

My best guess is it's a borrowed 5 from Gminor (3 in Bb), suggesting a temporary modulation point if you every wanted to fully modulate.

Are the roots of the chords on the bottom? What inversions are you playing the chords in (specifically to get the melody notes)?

Done.

And I really don't understand the original question at all, but maybe this will help; it's very common in pop music to substitute the vii chord with a 5/7 compound chord: the V chord triad over the vii chord bass note.
