It was written by Alvin Dread a very long time ago.  Has someone else recorded it lately?

A second verse?    We could barely get through the 1st one without folks "going in" 1/2 way through it, Lord only knows what that choir stand would have looked like with a second verse.  LOL

I was looking at some of our old choir concert tapes for back in the day and that was one of the songs, and no one ever knew where it came from.  Our musician at the time said she just picked it up when she heard another choir sing it back then and thought it to us.  (man those were the days)

The words that Ferrente typed are the words to Bishop Larry Trotter's version and it's fast.
The words that I typed are TOTALLY different and has a lead and it is mid tempo.

Don't know if you still needed to know who recorded this KeptbyJesus  but I know now.   Lawncliff was right that Alvin Dread wrote the song, I think he and his choir recorded this song too. I say that because I know Donald Vails & The Choraleers recorded this too, though Vail's version is the same lyric wise as the song I heard growing up, it wasn't the one I remembered hearing all the time, meaning it's been recorded more than once.

I'm pretty sure Alvin Dread's choir is the one we both are probably are recalling, because I remember hearing a male singing lead and it was a bit slower, mid tempo as you wrote versus Vail's version with a female lead and a bit faster.
