I've read up from several sources and they all confirm what I'm saying.
Now, you may have met some traditionalists, but everything that I've read claims that this teaching is not part of their system any longer. If they still believe this lie...
Again, what they used to teach was right inline with the old "curse of Ham/curse of Canaan" teachings that used to exist in the 3 main religions and are still taught by the extremists/racists. Yes, it was used to teach that slavery was legit and that blacks were lesser people and all that kind of crap.
More evidence of our sad, disgusting history as humans and Americans.
My apologies to you, Rue, if I got you more riled up. You know that I like picking on you like you're my little sister, right?
You know that we agree more than we disagree, right sis?
Dave, you don't owe me an apology. I'm cool. I'm passionate and you know this by now. Racism disgusts me, and the only thing that disgusts me MORE than racism is when racism is excused, pardoned or overlooked. You keep comparing this to the big 3 but they have all denounced and abandoned those teachings. The LDS church has not. They NEVER denounced the teachings, not even in 1978. When they began to allow blacks into the priesthood, they still didn't denounce the teachings (which is why it's still in their bible). You can look it up for yourself. I'm telling you what I know. This teaching was NEVER denounced by the LDS. So it is not appropriate to compare Mormons in that regard to Christians, Jews or anyone else. You're comparing history to present time. I think that what you think occurred in 1978 is not really what happened. They never abandoned this teaching.
This teaching is racist and it is still in the Book of Mormon today. They reprint this book and distribute it, they teach from it, they preach from it, they believe in it, they take an oath to uphold it, to this very day in 2012. So it's not an outdated teaching. It is current. It is up to date. It is what they believe today. They will try to twist it, but if you ask them a straightforward yes or no question they will acknowledge that it is indeed what they believe. I don't know if the guys who came to my house on Labor Day were "traditionalists." They were young, 19 and 20 (yes I asked because their name tags said "Elder" so and so, and they looked like teenagers). More importantly, they were representatives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and they ALL teach the same exact thing. They are not like Baptists, Pentecostals, Methodists, etc. where you might go to one church and hear one doctrine and go to another church and hear a different doctrine. The Mormons all teach the same thing, and as hard as it may be for you to believe it, that is what they teach. I understand that it could put a person in a tough spot if they do think it matters. If it matters, then you have to ask whether you can in good conscience vote for someone who was raised in racist ideals. If it matters, you have to ask whether you can vote for someone who very likely believes that black people are cursed. If it matters, you have to ask whether it makes you racist (whether black or white) to vote for someone who does not distance himself from the teaching that black people were originally supposed to be white. Yeah, if it matters, you have to ask quite a few tough questions. And then make a pretty tough decision.
Then of course, there's the possibility that it doesn't matter at all.
