Glorifying Self
« on: October 22, 2012, 07:58:30 AM »
Quick question:  Do you think an individual can determine who someone else sings or play for?  I read a comment regarding Zacardi Cortez were an individual stated that he sings to uplift himself not God.  I thought that was a bold statement...what do you guys think?

I believe an individual can make that determination for themselves but not as a general statement.

In other words, they may believe Mr. Cortez is singing for self but unless they have concrete evidence to support this belief then it's merely an opinion...their opinion.

I think there is a certain amount of self glorification in all of us .. especially those of us who are n the arts.. I have offended some people in our MM in the past by saying this.. but I believe it. Just overplay or over sing someone who always claims that they are doing this to glorify God and you will see that ego come popping out. Regardless however since none of us are totally immune to this, regardless to the lip service ... IMO none of us are in a position to judge anyone else on the subject.

That's it right there.

Whenever looking at someone else's condition leads you to feel better about yourself and your own character, a measure of pride is creeping in.

Pride is an extremely subtle adversary and it's one we ALL face.  Even calling someone else on their pride can be a kind of pride.

Prayer and bible study CAN lead to pride if you think yourself to be a better christian because of your prayer and study and/or look down on others because of it.  We all know people like that.

Gaining secular knowledge CAN lead to pride.

Humility CAN lead to pride if you think yourself more humble than others.

I say judge it by the spirit. If what they are doing is taking away then there may be an issue somewhere.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

my thing is, what does "uplift" mean?

is it "uplift"= lifting your spirit?

or

uplift="puffing your chest out" (i only hear that in chu'ch, btw)

I find nuffin wrong with playin/singing and in doing so, you feel food about it, essentially "lifting" your spirit.

Self is a bear - easier to judge in others than in oneself...

Maybe. Many times people's actions and words show who they are playing for. But just because someone looks like they are singing or playing for selfish reasons, does not mean that's always the case. Many times you can't really judge someone unless you know them personally.

I don't know much about Zacardi, but when he came to NY he totally killed it. I've never heard a dude sing that well before.

From my experience people who think more of themselves  than they ought to usually have a tendency to think less of others who are not as skillful .. I consider that to be glorifying self.. and I know a lot of people in the church who chortle and snicker when they see someone who is less skillful that they are.

Lol.. but the thing is.. this is where you see most of the Blues Brothers mentality.. (We're on a mission from GOD!!) ..but in a lot of cases we act just like folks in the world do. Some of us anyway.. Justin Raines wasn't like that.. neither were the guys from Mercy Me ... very humble..
