Standard things to do in a fast song
« on: July 09, 2012, 09:01:19 PM »

Since Jesus Came Into My Heart

from 3:47 to 3:49 he did some kind of a riff which i commonly hear in black jazz-gospel 4/4 fast songs like this, and i was wondering if you could explain to me the thoery of that so i can play it in any key....

also a similar lick from 3:28 to 3:30

Thank you for your time and attention.
God Bless

Well, I have no idea what he said, so you can still post it here and maybe more people will get to read it and help you understand.

he said this:

I cant help but think you're asking this in the wrong forum, but I'll give it a shot.

Im not near a board, but I think this is a "one-minor two move" that a lot of cats use. In a major key you play the one chord in this song it would be GBD and then play ACE, invert each and you can almost go up the whole scale of G major.

Scale

GABCDEF#G

RH chords only

watch top note

BDG   CEA  DGB  EAC  GBD  ACE skip chord with F# because that note doesnt fit in either chord  BDG

Ok, I got a chance to listen to the parts of the video you mentioned, and CS was right about that technique. I have it explained a little in another post, but here is what it's called:

Alternate minor 1 and minor 2 chords
Key Eb

Db-Gb-Bb or Eb-Gb-Bb (start high on keyboard, go all the way down, go all the way back up)
C-F-Ab
Bb-Eb-Gb
Ab-C-F
Gb-Bb-Eb
F-Ab-C
(repeat)

Alternate major 1 and minor 2 chords
Key Eb

Eb-G-Bb (start high on keyboard, go all the way down, go all the way back up)
C-F-Ab
Bb-Eb-G
Ab-C-F
G-Bb-Eb
F-Ab-C
(repeat)

I use this a lot in congregational songs and shouting music. Depending on what kind of song it is, you can use either option to give you some filler chords while running a standard shout pattern.
