I have a motif xs7 which is similar to the mox. They are very comprehensive units. I find that in my case, the performance and master controls are used most. There is so much that you can do in those modes, such as split and layer and manipulate the preset performances. Also, master lists can be made to use while performing in master mode. All of the performances are "user" and can be changed at will. Just hit "performances" on your unit and try a few of them.
There is so much that you can do with the unit that I have never connected to a computer, but relied on the unit alone. I am not good at keyboard/computer procedures. The people motifator.com will help you there. They are well versed on the Yamaha motif/mox and will share their knowledge freely as Doc noted. Enjoy your new board.
