NBAD: New Bass Amp Day!!! (WARNING: Markbass content)
« on: April 17, 2012, 03:17:20 PM »
Alrighty then, apparently there seems to be a love/hate thing going on with Markbass products (at least on Talkbass anyways). I must admit, the first time I played MB stuff the sales rep didn't know anything about them, I didn't either, and the result was this really nasty, nasally, horrible tone that made me disavow MB for 5 years.

Fast forward to last year...

I played at a good friends funeral through the church's Markbass NY102 + 115 cab....BLOWN away by the low end and clarity of this stack that sat no higher than my waist!

Fast forward to this past Saturday....

I decided my SWR was a bit too hi fi coming out of my Eden cab...and it's "supposed" 750w was more like 300w! Took it to Guitar Center and traded it in for.....

10th Anniversary Little Mark III head! So it's not like the most expensive MB thing you can buy, but it's perfect for me, especially coming through my Eden cab...last Sunday I kept the Gain and Master controls at 10:00, and my Cirrus was BARELY turned up.....gobs and gobs of clean low end, and an interesting mid-range bump which was cool, since that's what the Cirrus is all about anyways.

What's cool is it only weighs about 6-8 lbs I think, it'll fit in my gig bag! Once I get my Glasstone cab I'll have the most portable, powerful rig you'll ever need...unless you play at Madison Square Garden Sundays for church....

On another note:

My Eden D410XLT and my upgraded Peavey Tour 115 are both for sale if anybody in the DC/VA/MD/PA/DE is interested.... $450 and $300 respectively......

YOU USE MARKBASS!!!!! Man, I must be doing something right, thank you JESUS!!!! LOL

Yeah man, that crazy sales rep at Guitar Center the first time I played a MB amp really didn't know his stuff....If I knew then what I know now, I would've been playing Markbass stuff, instead of spending all this devilish money on gear I was going to get rid of. People may call me crazy, but my LMIII has the perfect mix of features (for the gearhead in me), and simplicity (I despise graphic EQ's with Ultra Hi/Low, Boost, Suboctaver/Overdrive built in effects!!). I like it better than my Genz Benz!

I've heard great things about Aggie's stuff, especially the Tone Hammer series. Their DB stuff is soooo expensive though!!! But if their onboard preamps are any indication, I'm sure the TH heads sound awesome.

As far as clips, I'm not sure what you want my old toenails for, but I'll send 'em to you if you just GOTTA have them, I need your address. LOL. I should have some clips up soon, I was trying to wait until I purchase a new cab (Glasstone), but I'll go ahead with the Eden.
BBG, sent you a PM.

I've had mine for about 2-1/2 years now! Smoking little amp and loud as all get out! I run mine through 2 GK Neo112's or a 4ohm Genz Benz 410T-XB! I will say this.....it depends on what bass you're using. My Lakland 55-01 sounds a little muddy but my US Fender Jazz gives me the best bass sound I've ever heard.

S/N: Time to put some single coils in the Lakland!

Oh, and don't get caught up in using those 2 filters. I keep mine off. Sounds much better to me.

Yeah man, I promise this thing is WAAAAYYYY louder than my 750w SWR! I was playing around with it yesterday and found out something may be wrong with the tweeter on my Eden. I kept turning the VLE knob up just to get some highs, but it cuts the mids, which isn't quite what I wanted. I'm going to see if I can replace the tweeter diaphram, I don't feel like paying $300 bucks for a service center to take a month fixing it!

I can get quite a few usable tones from the filters, you just can't make drastic adjustments. When connected to my Peavey Tour the highs get extra crispy the more I turn the VLE up, like breaking glass crispy! But I love the fact that an EQ change can be very quickly made.

Re:S/N: Single coils will make the Lakie sing!! Thinking about ordering a Brubaker Brute and getting some singles put in there for that Miller sound....

Alright, I finally got my custom Glasstone 212!!! I'll be making some recordings tonight so yall can get an idea of them, but this "Lil G" has literally blown away any notions of little cabs creating little sound. It's easily as loud and has as fast an attack as my Eden D410XLT, but it only weighs 29lbs! With my MB LMIII, it's killer! Here are a few pics, my whole rig now sits a little over two feet high, and weighs a back breaking 40lbs!!

Nice!! Actually MarkBass was one of my early choices.. when I started playing again and decided i needed something better than my limited La-15 combo I had no clue where to even start. I got locked into this SWR WP400 but it was big and heavy.. and I wasn't crazy about the sound... My wife's cousin was singing in a D.C. jazz band and we went to see them and their bass player was using a LMII ... That was the first time I saw/heard a MkBass amp.. (also read micro head too because I didn't know they came tat small.. needless to say I was blown away..) . I went to GC and liked what I heard... but didn't have the full $$$ ... Then I stumbled into TB... and discovered GB and the rest was history. I lijke MkB stuff and have considered getting a used one as a backup.. but my 900 just suits me so I will probably be a GB user for a while..  One thing I didn't like about the MkB heads I saw at the time was that they didn't have a mute feature..

I think the LMII/LMIII are the only one's without a mute.

Yes, GB is definitely worth the money you pay for it!!! I've just been on a search for tone, so I try different things. I'm glad I found MB...though now....and yall are gonna laugh....I've discovered Acoustic Image.....

I tried the Mini Mark and it was cool, but I've since switched to the Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 and this seems to suit my playing style and the type of tone I like to hear out of a Class D amplifier

I've been looking at those TH500's too. I haven't had a chance to actually play out of one yet though. Are the EQ points the same as Aguilar's onboard preamps? I have to try one of those things out.

I've had my Acoustic Image head now for a month or two, it it's easily the cleanest head I've ever used. Real straightforward....reminds me of a portable pa/power amp mixer.

Yep.  I got an Acoustic Image little 112 combo at work for jazz gigs, and it is VERY clean.  The other bass player ordered it, but he just retired lol.  I might do a comparison of them soon.

Let me know how you like it BBG, I hear that the AI speakers aren't all that great compared to other micro cabs....I still want to try the Tecamp Puma 1000, I'm starting to think the AI is a little TOO clean, but I have to get used to it I suppose.

Ummm....like when you gon let me buy one of those sweet basses the Air Force GIVES you lol?????

I was playing thru a LMII  for a couple of months and I thought it was a neat little amp, but I found that I like Class A/B Amps more so than Class D so it's back to the old Aguilar DB750 for now, however I've been eyeing the Epafani UL 501.
It's 850 watts @ 4ohms ( not that I'm sure I need that much power anymore) and it's class A/B but there's nothing wrong with MarkBass if that's what a player likes  :)
