« on: November 28, 2011, 10:31:02 PM »
I'm trying to get up a good list of instrumentals.  Any suggestions?  Here's what I have thus far and it will give you and idea of my taste.

Perfect Moment - Peter White

Children - Robert Miles

Song Bird - Kenny G

Summer Madness - Kool and The Gang

That's Just the Way It Is (instrumental) - Bruce Hornsby and Range

I have no problem with his music, but a lot of musicians do, and with smooth jazz in general. Probably because a lot of it is corny and mainstream.

Thank you very much PhBrown and Malththumb.  It is truly easy to find when you seek in the proper or adequate areas.

I know Norman Brown, George Benson, and Marcus Johnson all do jazz renditions (sp?) of secular music. Just watch out some of MJ's still uses some of the words which may have cussing (only on one song that I know of though).

Check out these cats i personally know

Merlon devine (has 3 albums) Also a christian, incidentally.
Merlon Devine - Change

and Alphonso Blackwell, went to performing arts wit this cat.
Free & Easy - Alfonzo Blackwell

fourplay is good stuff.
Funny story, The church band was asked to do a jazz set for an event, and the drummer, who is also a professional driver, wanted to do "chant", and I was like "dude, i like the song, but if we aint got a chart, we aint got time to figger it out"

Next week, he came it with a chart.

He just happened to be driving for Bob James.

I actually like Kenny G. Dude has skills on that sax. I wouldn't buy his albums or anything, but I can appreciate his stuff.

Seeing as how I gravitate towards the guitar players in the world, there are tons of amazing instrumental songs by George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Norman Brown, Larry Carlton, Mike Stern, Stanley Jordan and so many others.
And then there's more keyboard-driven stuff by Herbie Hancock and Pieces of a Dream.
For sax-driven instrumentals, my friends Justo Almario, Pam Williams, Scott Mayo and Donald Hayes have all released solo records of amazing music.
Music theory is not always music reality.

Props to those who mentioned Jeff Lorber.  I'd recommend his entire Flipside album.  Super good.

Also my favorite album of all-time, Robert Glasper's In My Element.  Oh, and Glasper's Canvas album is also amazing.
