"High Praise" Progressions for Keys + Bass Player
« on: October 17, 2011, 01:07:22 PM »
Hi everyone,

Sorry if this has been discussed before. If so, could you point me to the right thread?

I play bass at my church (and am learning piano too). We have an incredible piano player at our church who plays for the service. He's more of a Jazz guy though and didn't grow up in the Black Church tradition. So I'm trying to find some "high praise" progressions to use during the service that I've heard so often on CDs and at other churches.

We had a moment of high praise in service yesterday. On bass, I stayed on the tonic while he was doing a whole bunch of pretty sounding jazzy chord changes up top on keys. I'd love for us to try out some of those Baptist/Pentecostal/COGIC-style high praise progressions though, but I have no idea what the chords are that a keyboard player is playing while I'm following on bass.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about from a Vashawn Mitchell song. Fast forward to the 7:06 mark to hear how the band moved at the end of the song:

Could someone possibly break down what the keyboard chords are at the end of the video (I can hear the bass obviously but don't know the piano chords)?

Also, what are some other common progressions you have also used for this too?

Thanks!
