What is everyone working on right now?
« on: September 08, 2011, 02:02:00 PM »
just trying to get a dialogue going, not about what we should be working on or right or wrong etc., but individually, what are you practicing and trying to improve upon.

personally, i know i should be practicing theory, but i'm not (yet). what i did find was a youtube video on the "hopscotch" method, that im practicing to help me connect the dots a little better. i can get up and down the fretboard somewhat, but not fluidly all the time. it's fairly easy what he's explaining, but i've never heard of it or tried it until now. just adding something else to the repertoire to hopefully keep getting better.

what about you???

I'm working on playing w/o pain in my pinky.
It's the weirdest thing...playing volleyball back at the church picnic many months ago and got tangled up in the net and an opponents fingers while going for a spike. Twisted my left hand up bad.
The pain is mostly gone, but there's still an occasional twinge of pain that's messing with my fingering.

Other than that, just getting back to being a cleaner, more precise player like I sort of used to be. Always working on my left/right hand and finger synchronization.
Music theory is not always music reality.

Cool.   Sorry to hear about the pinky man and definitely hope/pray it gets better.  i burned my hand few years ago and had to have skin graft surgery, so it was wrapped and bound for a while. i was still playing at church tho, can't put the axe down for anything  :)

Working on my slide technique (Dunlop glass slide).

Increasing my licks library so I don't keep doing the same old pentatonic licks over every song ::). Also trying to use my current licks creatively.

Trying to clean up my finger control and my alternate picking combined with HO/POs so I can do rapid up-and-down 3 note runs over and over without losing my left-hand/right-hand coordination.

Working on increasing my down-picking speed, especially when combined with palm-mutes. Unfortunately, I saw the advantages if alt-picking early out, so I never went through the "down-picking only " stage, and so I never developed a lot of control in that technique. Even the Jonas Brothers can down pick better than I can... =(

Working on playing more "vocally", like a singer.

And really really trying to get my muted strumming to sound like Uriah's. Uriah can do funky "wah-ish" mute strumming without a wah pedal just by changing his pick position and attack strength... when I do it it just sounds like Pacman. ::)

lol. that's cool bro! sounds like you got a good game plan going.

i have a whole workout/practice schedule worked up, i just have to find the time to do it. it's technique based, trying to get my chops back in shape. i don't know that i will ever get back to the level i was at one time in my life, but i'm waayyyy too sloppy for my taste now.

just have to figure out how to plan it so i can do it consistently. it's looking like the 5:30am to 7am would be the best time...but whew...

Better solo guitar playing...
I used to think that when I played chord melody, every note had to be attached to a chord.
Almost like "block style" piano.
Playing for guitarist Rick Stone, he told me to state the melody clearly and allow the voicings to fit in between!

I'm steadily working on becoming THE worlds' greatest guitar player ever (without selling my soul to the Devil)..........but short of that, I'll be content with improving on my improvisation.  Better note selection and the ability to think a little outside the box are key areas that I'm focusing on.
