You just need MIDI.

Hmm......interesting.
Despite our communication technology, no invention is as effective as the sound of the human voice.

Thanks, stix_clgi!  There are a couple of options.  What I was using was the Apple Camera Kit and the M-Audio MIDI Uno MIDI interface (make sure this is brand new, the older ones don't work with the iPad).  This shouldn't cost you more than $70 (not including tax).  You probably find it cheaper if you shop around.

Sweet, I looked at the link Chevonee provided and I like Apogee's stuff, but it can get pretty expensive. This is cool though, breathing new life into GB for me, I was getting tired of trying to play progressions on those on-screen keys lol....Thanks again!!

Keep in mind the Apogee One is an audio interface.  What I'm doing is MIDI.  That is pretty cool that you can use the Apogee One with the iPad.  Having to power it isn't cool though.  Kind of takes away the whole mobility.

very nice!!! SJon-probably only need a midi out and a jack( like the audio out from an i-pod or computer) for the audio. Some of the i-pads are a little pricey-like 7-800.Would there be any advantage i-pad vs a mac laptop ;they're about !1100?

Okay, so somebody help me out...if you use a powered midi controller, you don't need to power the USB hub right? When I plugged my keyrig to the camera connection kit, it said there wasn't enough power to use the accessory. But when I used the USB Midi out from the church's Yamaha MoX, it didn't work. Am I doing something wrong? I figured since the yamaha is already powered it should be able to power the USB connection. Help please lol.....

It all depends on what you're trying to do.  What are you looking to do?

Here's how it works.  The MIDI keyboard not only need to be MIDI class compliant, but if it is USB powered the power requirements cannot be too high.  In other words, the USB controller cannot require too much power, otherwise, it won't work.  In fact, I have a Novation Remote SL 37 that can be battery powered, however, even when it is battery powered the iPad is complaining about it not being able to supply enough power.

Hope that helps.  Also, IOSMIDI.com is an awesome resource for what is compatible with the iPad.

BTW, when you say your church's, "Yamaha MoX", do you mean "Yamaha Mo8" being that the MoX has been released, yet?

Yes sir, I meant that...I guess my local music store got them early. They had a few models in stock when we went to purchase a keyboard last Thursday ;D

Thank you for your help, it seems that I will have to connect my current midi controller to a powered USB hub, then connect the hub to the iPad. As for the MoX I guess it's not compatible, I didn't see it on the list....

Mac laptops still have way more processing power than the iPad, especially the new ones with the i5 and i7 Intel processors in them. And the iPad can only record a limited amount of pure audio (it stops recording when it reaches the limit, with no warning or anything lol). So like yellowchops said, it depends on what your expectations are and what exactly you want to do. I think the iPad would be great for triggering tracks or samples in live situations (I'm putting this to the test this weekend at a concert....pray for me lol)

Also, honeslty, the iPad isn't THAT much more portable than the smallest MacBooks (Macbook 13", MacBook Air)...with the only difference being the Macbook has an external power supply. The only reason I didn't get a MacBook instead is because I want the Beast, the 17" MacBook Pro fully upgraded lol, and I'm saving the necessary $3500 to get one haha!!

How do you like the sounds?  Does it really sound like a Motif XS?

As far as I can tell, yes, when they said they used the same sound engine as the XS I think they meant it! However, I'm not the church piano player (I play bass) so my description my be a little lacking. I can tell you that the synth bass and electric bass sounds on the MoX are EXACTLY like the XS, I remember playing an XS last year and being amazed at the sound quality. I have that same feeling now when I play the keyboard at church. The acoustic grand pianos are rich especially when you hit that low Bb!! Plus the board has a built in 4-band EQ section (controlled by four physical knobs) that allows you to dial in as much treble or bass as you like....it's crazy man!!! We've played our first two services with the keyboard and we can really tell the difference...even some of the saints could tell the difference. I didn't finish testing a lot of the brass sounds, but the ones I played I liked a lot. It really sounded like a brass section was in the sanctuary playing with me lol!!! I think I'll do a little review on Youtube because it's a whole lot to type, but like I said, I don't play keyboard that much, so my demos won't be like yours lol!!

I will take some more pics tonight at Bible study...

Yeah, I guess it should since Yamaha said it has the same sound engine, but with 64 voice polyphony instead of 128.  I don't think that should matter if you're playing live...unless you're doing a lot of layering...

Yeah, and I don't think my sis is going to do a lot of layering anyways, she's pretty basic...

I just tried it with a motif ES-6 and an Ipad first Generation and it worked. Camera adapter for ipad and usb cable to motif and ding ding ding ding - worked fine.. Now I just have to figure out how to get the sounds I got From Jamal in there so I can play the MKS-sounds as he did. Then figure out how to make my own sounds.. What a task..
