Seeking recommendation of electric drums
« on: April 03, 2011, 02:18:38 PM »
Hi all.

I'm seeking recommendations for electric drumkit.  I don't have room for an acoustic kit. and might have to take it to different venues.

What type and which brands would you guys suggest.

I dont care how much tech they put in those e-kits but I know they will never fill or sound as good as an acoustic kit!

There are kits that are made just for issues like yours!

Amen Amen Allaround, but if you want a kit that can do you both justice you might want to check out the Pearl E-Pro it is a hybrid kit that is both acoustic and a e-kit, if you can afford it.  but if you wanna be on the cheap side like me that has family to feed get you some triggers yo, you don't need much to put on a show a snare, bass drum, and a tom or two should suite up nicely get a roland sp sample pad and get it triggered up and you good to go cost, around 700 or less if you know where to look.

The new Yamaha DTXtreme kits are by far the most advanced in feel and they have the Motif sound engine.

The Alesis DM5/DM7 would Be my next recommendation for sound, price and feel.

The Pearl brain is nice. It is the last brain ddrum developed in there electronic kit line years ago before they sold that line to a German company. However, they e-kit heads/pads are not there yet.

For the money and what you get, I'd have to go with the TrapKat from Alternate Mode. I own one, with the Roland TDW20 module and a Hart Kick.

The TK has 24 pads, you can also play melodic instruments on it (two octaves).

I really like mine. The new one is much nicer to play than the older models, as well.

No insult to anyone but the TrapKat is probably way too much machine for most gospel/urban gospel setups call for... and a lot less straight forward. Besides that, as with a lot of exotic wood kits, custom kits and the like, the Trapkat is under-represented in urban the marketplace which tends to limit instruction/information.

All alternate mode instruction manuals and info can be found at their web site. They are quite easy to use. Plus they have a discussion board. The owner, Mario C. is intimately involved in all aspects of his company and is just a phone call or email away, along with his staff, for tech help.

While the cosmetic look of the TrapKat is certainly not traditional, the ability to play a drum set and percussion at the same time is certainly a benefit to any drummer of any genre. You can't do that with a standard five or six pc. edrum set up. The layout of pads on the TK offers abilities no other edrum set-up can match.

As far as too much machine, I wonder how many urban gospel keyboard players utilize every aspect of the keyboards they use.  That's not an argument in favor or disfavor of using any instrument, of any kind.

The point is... your suggestion (while great) is overkill for the OP.

You may have/see need to use the TrapKat because you know what to do with it. Not everyone will know what to do with or how they can fully utilise it.
Better they buy something with limited specs so they learn their way into knowing what they want.

On a semi-related note: I want a TrapKat now :(
