« on: March 09, 2011, 02:14:29 PM »
what do you do or say when you have a wanna be music or praise team director who doesn't know how to play the music/ I'm the musician that can really play the song as it is of the CD. ok the problem is that this guy been with the church from day one so i feel he threating by my sills, even though the church pays me to play the songs but he doesn't get paid because he makes such a mess of the songs. I often feel like I'm in a box because he dosn't take suggestions because of his pride I looking to leave but I have my wife and kids there and my wife sings on the praise team. what would you suggest I do? a lot of churches can use me but only wants to pay 50-100.00 I can stop working for a measly $50-100.00 help a brother out!!!

Why does he have to be able to play the songs in order to teach them? ?/?

from my experiece a director should know the song so they can teach it as well!thats what I do... ok this guy can barely play and plays the wrong inversion of the chords often giving the p/w team the wrong choir parts! as a musician who is trying to step on his toes, he doesn't recives suggestions well, hell he don't communicate with me as the musician until a day before rehersal!! how does that direspect a musician thats trying to prepare for songs a musician needs a week to really becomfortable with the songs....do you agree?

I'd agree. That's an easy fix. Whatever they're working on, learn it on your own.  In this manner, when the director finally comes around, you'll be ready--even if he/she messes it up.

As for giving the wrong choir parts, as long as they are a part of the harmony, then it's really not that big of a problem for the altos to sing the soprano part and the tenors to sing the alto part, etc.

Now, if the harmony is clashing, then you need to speak up--toes or no toes.

Well, you can only do what you can do....and by all means, do everything in your power to do that to the best of your ability.

If it was me, and I was making the decision to stay, my tactics would have to change to a more psychological approach as opposed to the head-on approach, which seems to not currently be working.

The first thing is his communication sounds like its whack, or doesn't exist at all. I wouldn't wait on him to give me something, try to be proactive and ask him what songs he's thinking about doing, offer him suggestions for songs you know, etc.  Be aggressive about it. You don't want the perception to be that you didn't ask or that you didn't care. GET ON HIS NERVES....but in a nice Christianly way, hehe.

If and when stuff hits the fan, and the pastor starts questioning whats up with the music, don't let him be able to say that "you weren't trying to get/learn the music".

And if he still ain't giving you assistance, then don't play for him a time or two, that should at least give him a sense of "hey, i can't do this by myself".

As far as changing his teaching or correcting how he teaches, there probably isn't much you can do. He appears to be set in his ways, and simply can't take constructive criticism. Thats probably something only God will be able to show him.

In the mean time, be blowin' up his phone all week until rehearsal....of course in a nice Christianly way.... ::)

you know its funny because the pastor tries to run everything because its a small church he wants to have say so on everything from the music on down and he does not know music!!! back to the director, he doesn't know how to pick music for the praise team...he's stuck on fred hammond and they don't have the fred hammond singers......trying to tell this dude is like pulling teeth.... I think my season is up at this place....they are thick headed and his pride gets in the way...trying to tell this dude what songs are best he won't listen better yet the songs he picks He can't even play so they depen on me to learn the stuff but won't listen to the cd all week try to come into rehersal and learn the song ending up in a big conflict attitudes start fuming and no progress......
