I need Help Urgently!!

Im in Beaufort SC.. I would really love to learn to play for my church.. We have no piano player.. Im taking lessons, but Im being taught by a nice old lady who believes in taking things slow. So I have been playing things like twinkle twinkle little star for the past 3 weeks.. I really want to learn to play by ear.  I bought the book by Jermaine Griggs but I don't understand it. Is there anyone who can help me!!!

welcome T!!!How long have you been playing?  It sounds like you may need to learn some theory;rudiments,etc.To play "by ear" doesn't mean 1 DVD= monster chops.Like everything else,you have to crawl before you walk-unless LORD drops a bomb on you.

If you WANT to play;this is a LIFE long learning process;no way to cut corners.The way to becoming a well rounded musician
is to become a well grounded one!

My brother or sister like he was saying you have to crawl before you walk. When I first started to learn I was 16 and I had a guy who was teaching me at first. But he couldn't cause he didnt have time. But I was determined to play, I cried many days and nights. To get where I am now it took much prayer and supplication, I went through the storm cause I wanted it sooo bad!! I even went through people saying stuff about  my playing and how he cant play at all. WHOO BUT TO BE KEPT BY JESUS!!!!! THANK YOU LORD!! Look at me now God has blessed me exceedingly and abundantly. I can pretty much play anything now. Best of all he gave me the anointing!!! YES LORD!!! The whole purpose of him allowing me to be on my own was so that he could get the glory out of my ministry and not me or anyone else. When I say I suffered, I suffered. But it was all worth it. Look at me now and now God gets what he wants in every situation GLORY!! I hope my testimony encourages you Be blessed in Jesus name!!!

Think the lady who is teaching you is developing your sight-reading. But we all know that Gospel players go a lot by ear. Here's a book which may help you and your teacher in balancing eye and ear skills...

Also try a video course like the free one online at www.Samsmuzikco.com  , or Wheatworks, Hear and Play, etc. I have a student who is learning to play from guitar-style chord charts, that is also good...
