Lightweight weighted or semi-weighted midi controller?
« on: August 26, 2010, 01:35:16 AM »
Fam,
I'm looking for a lightweight (20lbs or less) midi controller with weighted or semi-weighted keys (will probably have to be semi). 61 or 88 keys doesn't really matter.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
E

I assume this is for the road?  Just saw an add for one by Roland  labled for "Cakewalk" and I think Akai makes a 61;I like the feel of the Akai 88.But;a post here don't elicit much favorable response about akai.

Controllers that I've seen seem a little overpriced-$3-600 price range cheesy feel for the 25-61 notes.

I'm not crazy about the feel from like the CME stuff, and they seem pretty pricey. For the money;I might consider getting a MO 6 Yamaha (keys feel a little cheap) because you can use it as a stand alone board OR with your studio/ computer rig.Maybe a used Motif ES 6 would work, except for the weight.

Some of my friends are going the laptop/controller route;from 88 wtd." tanks" to "itsy bitsy" toys.Best I can share!

Doc,
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out.
I already have a 61-key board (Yam S30), but the non-weighted keys make it tough to play piano passages when on the road.
I could bring my X8, but the thing weighs a ton and doesn't even fit in the back of my car.
I saw this one, which looks good....

I know you're not looking for this answer, but why don't you just get an Electro? The 61 key version is only 13lbs, and it has piano,ep,strings, and a real organ clone. Can't go wrong with that, unless you really need to use sounds from another module or computer. If that's the case, then it'll be an expensive controller. LOL

Thanks for the answers - I checked out the VMK and it looks tasty.
B3: which Electro are you referring to? And what's the key feel like?

The keys have an organ feel, which is probably OK for electric piano, but it does feel weird with acoustic.
