Nord stage
« on: July 11, 2010, 07:57:16 AM »
Anybody has/is/had used one of these for a controller?   One of my friends has a chance to pick one up cheap;but he wants a good simple controller to use in/with his studio stuff.

I've never seen the beast.

If he can get a Nord for the low-low, then by all means get it.  Nord makes some good stuff.  Plus the onboard sounds are serious.  He needs to make that happen.

I know the Electro Sounds are Killer-but could you use it for studio apps(Easily!!!) like a CME,M-audio etc?One BIG thing is to use it independent of it's onboard sounds as a controller( which is WAYY beyond my 2$$)

It can be easily used as a controller.  That's as simple as doing a MIDI hookup and turning down the volume.  I use an Ensoniq workstation as my controller for VST sounds and a module and it works fine.  I run it all through a 4-channel MIDI interface.  The plus is that I have the option of having some great general stock sounds at my disposal.

While it can be used as a simple MIDI controller, Nord MIDI implementation is not full-feature.  It does not make an ideal controller for heavy duty use.

I really like the sounds from my Nord Electro 3, but my Kurzweil PC3 walks all over it as a MIDI controller.

Still - if the price is right, it does have some good internal sounds (and a good group of sounds can be downloaded free from Nord's web site.

Doc:

I sold my 1981 Gibson RD Artist Bass and Kurz K2000VP & K2661 on EBay to fund the Electro and a pair of QSC K10's.  The Nord is more limited than the PC3, but what it does, it does well.  Also - it only weighs 18.3 pounds for a 73 key board - easy load in/out.

At church, I now have the PC2 there all the time, and carry the Electro for Hammond emulations.

I was just reading a review on the Q's-how are you liking them?

I'm in the process of reconfiguring my rig;just played the N 3  and IT is cool!!!!

I'm trying to get 3 keys going;sell my Korg CX 3 for a Nord E 3;then incorporate a controller below it to double as the lower manual AND trigger my Motif XS 6(when I want to layer lower organ manual with XS patches). Also, use the controller USB with my i Mac.I just missed a bid on a Yamaha controller.

I have an A 100 case that I could put all 3 keys in;but need some good spkrs also;run all my stuff into a mixer with a cd recorder.Nice, neat, tidy!

So far, I'm very pleased with the K10's - have not used them out on a gig yet, they are in my studio.  I did debate for a while whether to get 10's or 12's (12's seem to be a real good fit for keyboards), but decided to go lighter and smaller.

I've got a pair of JBL EON 10G2 - did use for gigging, but they would get hot and reduce their power (built-in thermal protection circuit) - they are now in the lifing room for the family keyboard, a PC2X.  The pair of EON15 G2 are at church handling my keys rig there.

I have a pair of Electro Voice SXA-100+ 12" speakers that I am using for gigging.  Great sounding speakers.  I've been told that the SXA-350's are better sounding - but these were my best before I got the K10's.  Right now, I'm not sure which are better overall (but the K10's are smaller and lighter - also rated higher power).

The PC3 and Electro 3 complement each other nicely.  Just got back from a gig with the country/gospel/oldies band - I carry one of the EV's and the E3, stand, cables, pedals - all loadin in 1 trip if I really try, 2 trips if I take it easy.   I haven't carried both boards out yet, although I carry the E3 to church and use it for Hammond, with the PC3 for other sounds.

I don't often have to play key bass (although if I have a gig with that, I can carry my Trace bass amp and the 2 cabs for it - but they are old-fashioned, bulky and heavy). Either the EVs or the QSCs seem to handle piano, elect. piano, organ, and orchestrals well.

I hang on the MusicPlayer Keyboard Corner a good bit - a lot of pro. players there - and good info shared on equipment and technique.  About the only other piece of equipment that I would even like to have now would be a Ventilator for the ultimate portable Leslie effect.
