reading is not all classical
I just came from Sa,m ash
I found books on jazz that had some chords I hear modern gospel musicians play all the time.
I think iti s called 50 jazz classics.
and of course there are the old Wow songs books
I think the last one was 2006
but contained in these pages are some really nicely arranged piano music
I always just used the chord symbols
but I am going to go back to study them from a reading perspective.
just to strengthen the skill.
of course the classical method books give you phenomenal technique
the gospel and jazz boodks will give you great voice leading and chord moves that you are going to love.
I think if you get to 3rd grade level in thompson or fourth grade level with Alfred or Bastien or suzuki
you can handle any wow book
get some song books alicia keys
again if you cant read at all start
with teach little fingers to play
its all about hand position
an adult cn go through this book in a week
and then you will be redy for grade one
which you could probably get through in a month
book two may take you two months
and then you will be reading.
and ready for more challenging material.
or whoever and motown soul
hyms
and try to incorporate them with your reading

here is an update on what is going on with this jazz book the exact title is Jazz classics 50classics from the beebop era and beyond
the first tune I picked up was killer joe I figured it would be easy but immediately I was faced with some little voicings which were easy enough to play but the placement was awkward at first and I kept struggling not to fill in the space with notes and fillers
I immediately began to realize that the first thing I was going to learn is that playing in the holes is a key point to grooving
and I had a lot to learn.
I managed to do the first two pages in one sitting.
and after playing it through a few times I began to experiment with soloing
I was interested to hear that my ideas were far better than I had expected an improvement over what I first tried to do when I began to learn the song.
Again I recommend doing this kind of reading to fill in the blanks of
classical and even gospel
because Jazz will teach you a lot about groove voice leading textured harmony and substitutiions
and reading arranged pieces will give you a more authentic point of view than what you may create
without having the experience.

True....Jazz transcription books will help music readers learn the voicings, runs, etc.
Not easy to find in smaller music stores, but look online...
