B flat 7, Cm7 and Ddim7 chords
« on: July 08, 2010, 07:34:15 AM »
These are passing chords for We Have Come This Far By Faith that are posted in the chorded section. I am playing it in D flat, but I can't figure out what inversion to play them in to make it sound right.  Thank you for your help in advance.

I'm not familiar with that tune, but a general rule would be to voice the chord where it fits in the flow;following your leading tones.Since this is a seris of whole steps:  D,C,Bb-look at the top and bottom note just before/after this run and the chords you are playing/voicing.That dictates to a degree what you will need to do.

But,you can go outside this box too, depends on your facility, can add a degree of tension,counterpoint-some of those MUSical inventions.chill, have fun, try,+++++++++++Practice

At which verse in the song are these chords being applied? Here's my version in Ab on youtube.

Black History Month " We've Come This Far By Faith"
I love music, any kind of music.

I played through this arrangement that is in the chorded section I am not comfortable with the Gb chord usually you would play off of the Ab but to answer your question

I think a good simple but effective voicing would be

Bb/BDF
C/F#ACEb
Eb/F#BbDbF#

if you want to fatten up your left hand

BbF/AbDF
CF#/ACEbF#
DDF/AbBDF
EbDb/EbF/F#CEbAb

when in doubt think about your melody like doc said
i try to either pedal the melody or move up and down whole steps or chormatically when doing passing chords.

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

You mind posting the whole song and poiting out where those chords fit? It's kind hard to answer your question without this pertinent information.

O.K., I got it now. Basically, a 6-2 progression with filler chords.
